40 years ago this week I was coaching in SE Alabama. We were installing the Split Back Veer. We practiced in the evenings because all the kids worked on farms or for pulp wooders. We practiced two and half hours. We did half line for two hours. Inside Veer right for one hour and ISV left for another. I was the OL coach and the guy with the whistle. The HC would just nod at me, and I would blow the whistle twice and say, “Run it again.” It was a great time to be alive. It was better than a corn field in Iowa (it was heaven). By the time practice ended, we had at least 50 people in the stands (mostly parents) watching. No one complained. When we finished, one parent came up to me and said, “I think they got it, coach.” I think he was sincere. What a time to be alive. I hope this post causes me to dream about it tonight.
