How to think about renewable (weather-dependent) energy: 1. How many days can your system last on its own without wind or sun, as in a typical low-pressure regime? What's the maximum number of hours you can go without energy from the grid? 2. Look back at ten years of weather data. How often has an event of that length occurred? 3. Can your batteries last that long? If the weather makes it impossible to store enough energy to run the grid, traffic lights, public services, hospitals, schools, buses, airports, and buildings, is it okay to shut those down? 4. If you want to power your entire city during those times when wind and solar are defeated, how do you propose to keep your local utility standing at the ready? Should those people just wait around without getting paid until you need them? What about fuel, maintenance, and infrastructure? 5. Explain to me like I'm five: how do you plan to manage a weather event that has already happened several times in the recent past, and how do the overall economics work for your entire city?
