Even Paris knows what’s up
We’ve raised a $45m Series A, co-led by
@foundersfund and The @OpenAI Startup Fund, to build cancer therapy that learns. Technology is rapidly changing medicine, but data loops and rapid adjustments are still largely missing. When you start cancer treatment, knowing whether what you’re doing is working is too slow. Clearly there is a better way. Build systems to watch cancer in real time, then feed that data into a system that itself can treat the disease. This seeds a future where, unlike drugs, we develop medicine that continuously learns to improve itself. We've been building neurotechnology and BCI platforms to do just that.

New pod out!
So, there's a new brain implant in town. And it's for treating cancer.
The startup Coherence has built an implant that, as the name suggests, gets placed inside the body to keep a constant watch on a tumor’s behavior. The chip also brings with it the ability to deliver electrical signals that may blunt a tumor’s growth. We’re talking constant monitoring of a tumor to see if treatments are working and the ability to read and write electrical signals as part of a totally novel bio-tech device.
In this episode, Coherence CEO Ben Woodington explains how this technology works and, more broadly, he walks us through the emerging field of neuro-oncology or cancer neuroscience. We have a look at Coherence’s device, which is reminiscent of Neuralink’s implant, and rival technology.

Ever wondered what cancer sounds like?
Cancer rewires neural circuits in the brain, and we’ve been listening in. More to share in our upcoming pre-print.

Replying to @coherenceneuro
@coherenceneuro is racing against time and patients' lives are on the line.
"This need is so desperate. There are patients who don't have anything else."
"You also have to design an implant that is safe and effective."
"I have an inbox on LinkedIn filled with hundreds of clinicians, hundreds of patients desperate for this technology. That's all it is for me."

A brain implant that monitors cancer and learns how to fight it. Sci-fi until it isn't.
To @BenWoodington, @EliseJenkins and the entire @CoherenceNeuro team - thank you for dedicating yourselves to a future where where cancer isn’t a terminal diagnosis but a very manageable disease. We were blown away by your progress.
Our latest episode is out now.

Today: a 1.5 hour interview with the co-founders of @coherenceneuro: @WoodingtonBen and Elise Jenkins
They are, as far as i can tell, the only (neurotechnology x oncology) startup that exists today.
'Neurotechnology? For cancer?' you may ask. Yes! As it turns out, tumors interact with the nervous system a fair bit, and you can use the very same neuromodulation toolbox that exists for neuropsychiatric conditions, for monitoring and treating cancer. Coherence has built an invasive device to place at the site of a tumor to do exactly this.
Their first indication is a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma; one of the most fatal subtypes of cancer to exist today. The standard of care (with one exception that we discuss) has not changed in 25 years. If Coherence works out, and there is a very real chance they will, that may change.
Most interesting of all is that Coherence believes that the bioelectric properties of cancer are not just worth poking at for brain cancers, but for all cancers. And maybe even for diseases outside of it!
This conversation covers how Coherence’s first neurotech device (SOMA) works, the molecular reasons behind why neuromodulation affects cancer at all, what the biomarker readouts look like, the obvious Michael Levin comparison, and a lot more.
Also: shout to @elocinationn for setting up the connection here in the first place! Crazy to think that a meeting in mid-2025 ended up leading to this

The nervous system orchestrates most of what we do, but when biology goes wrong, we tend to look pretty exclusively at the organ, cell, DNA, morphology and so on. Why?
My frustration with this inconsistency planted the seed for @coherenceneuro

$10m for Coherence Neuro!
To build the world's first bi-directional implant for treating cancer.
Each device in a patient becomes part of learning system that gets more intelligent the more patients use it. Welcome to the future of cancer care.
Today, @Elise__Jenkins and I are thrilled to announce our $10m seed round.
Coherence Neuro is building foundational neurotechnology that will overhaul how we track and treat cancer.
40% of us will get cancer in our lifetimes, yet there is no single cancer care company. Why? Because the entire process involves numerous moving parts, various approaches, medications, and monitoring techniques, with no unified whole.
We solve this through our therapeutic neurotechnology and BCI platform—a critical technology for extending life and improving the human condition. Our platform brings a new approach to treating the disease while capturing biological data that was previously impossible to harness.
Combining these breakthroughs with AI, we can build cancer prediction models that update in real-time. We’ll adapt stimulation and drug therapies with continuous feedback to guarantee the most effective course of treatment.
All this begins with a tiny implant that treats cancer with electricity via your body’s master control system—the nervous system.
Our round was led by @topology_vc (@caseykcaruso) and @artesianvc , with continued support from all our pre-seed investors @Blackbird (@michaelatolo), @PossibleVC, and joined by investors and angels, @XEIA (@samalanascience & @therealbrom), @akilian, @arminbuilds, @mattkrisiloff , @lintaho, @timshi_ai, and @tszzl

So proud to be a partner to @WoodingtonBen and @Elise__Jenkins.
This is why venture exists.
To give remarkable people capital to build businesses that shape our future.
It starts with a tiny implant. One that requires no additional surgery. With that, tumors can be remediated with electricity. Not only are they curing cancer, they are collecting neural data we've never had access to.
This is part of the liftoff needed to build AI foundation models for the brain. A pathway to getting high quality data with low friction and high value.

~10 years ago, I was working on a drug that worked as a radiosensitizer & contrast agent in lung cancer and was struck by the apparent elegance of theranostic medicine.
It's one of the reasons I became so interested in neurotech/BCI/bioelectronics, seeing that same elegance.
