Stefan Thomas, former Ripple CTO and founder of Coil, has worked on Interledger, an open protocol for sending payments across different ledgers and currencies, since 2014. For most of that time, there was no lasting network to join. Stefan at @RippleSwell presents Dassie, which is a permanent, peer-to-peer Interledger network where anyone can run a node. Dassie adds two layers on top of XRPL: settlement hubs, where regional validators run a fast ledger backed by a multi-signature XRPL account so members can pay each other quickly without trusting each other; and the Dassie network itself, where nodes peer automatically and route payments across currencies and ledgers, starting with XRP and RLUSD. Why now? AI makes it possible to build and rigorously test software faster than ever, and it's driving demand for exactly the kind of fast, efficient payments Interledger was built for. Come see Dassie running live.

Thank you, @Control_Alt_BTC. The images you shared helped reveal how several pieces of the institutional financial infrastructure may fit together. What stands out is that many of the necessary components already exist, and some of the companies involved have established partnerships. These components could potentially be connected through XRPL. I believe this is an important finding when examining XRPL's potential development into infrastructure for institutional financial markets. This is a long analysis, but I've brought the key developments and their possible connections together below. Aviva Investors, Ripple, Komainu, and Licuido Tokenize a Liquidity Fund on XRPL — From a Nomura-Co-Founded Custody Platform to the Potential Development of Collateral Markets Through Ripple Prime 1. Aviva Investors Tokenizes a Liquidity Fund on XRPL Aviva Investors, a major UK-based asset management company, has launched a tokenized share class of its sterling-denominated Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) through its partnership with Ripple. This initiative follows the tokenization of a US dollar-denominated liquidity fund announced in July 2026, reflecting the growing adoption of blockchain technology for managing traditional financial products. A liquidity fund is an investment fund that primarily invests in short-term financial instruments, including Treasury bills, bank deposits, commercial paper (CP), and repurchase agreements (repos). It is similar to a money market fund (MMF) in Japan and is primarily used by corporations and institutional investors to manage surplus cash over short periods. The Sterling Liquidity Fund has approximately £22 billion in assets under management, making it one of Aviva Investors' major liquidity funds. However, the £22 billion figure represents the assets under management of the entire fund. It does not mean that the full amount has been tokenized on XRPL. Under this structure, the underlying financial assets held by the fund are not themselves transferred onto the blockchain. Instead, investors' interests in the fund are represented through tokenized fund shares on XRPL. This enables blockchain technology to support the issuance, ownership records, and transfer management of fund shares while preserving the traditional custody and investment management framework. 2. The Roles of BNY, Komainu, and Licuido Several financial institutions and technology providers perform distinct functions within this structure. Aviva Investors manages the liquidity fund, while BNY (The Bank of New York Mellon) is responsible for the custody of the fund's underlying assets. Meanwhile, Komainu is involved in institutional digital asset custody, and Licuido provides the tokenization infrastructure utilizing XRPL. Their respective roles can be summarized as follows: ・Aviva Investors: Liquidity fund management ・Ripple: Supporting the tokenization initiative and providing technical collaboration involving XRPL ・BNY: Custody of the fund's underlying assets ・Komainu: Digital asset custody ・Licuido: Tokenization infrastructure ・XRPL: Blockchain infrastructure supporting the issuance and management of tokenized fund shares The important distinction is that custody of the underlying assets and management of the tokenized fund shares are separate functions. Financial assets such as short-term government securities and deposits continue to be held and administered under traditional financial arrangements. Meanwhile, XRPL enables the digital management of the fund shares. However, the legal relationship between on-chain token records and ownership of the underlying fund shares depends on the fund's contractual terms and administrative framework. Furthermore, the announcement does not establish that Ripple Custody directly holds the fund's underlying financial assets. Licuido and XRPL's MPT Standard Licuido has introduced an institutional tokenization platform utilizing XRPL's Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) standard. MPT is a token standard designed to represent financial instruments such as fund shares and bonds on XRPL. Licuido also describes an architecture intended to accommodate both traditional financial custodians and digital asset custodians. This makes it possible to connect financial assets held off-chain with tokenized fund interests managed on-chain. However, Licuido's adoption of the MPT standard should not be confused with confirmation that Aviva Investors' specific tokenized share classes were issued using MPT. The actual issuance specifications require separate verification. Additionally, issuing a financial instrument as an MPT does not automatically mean that it can be freely traded on XRPL's decentralized exchange (DEX). Trading and transfers may be subject to investor eligibility requirements, transfer restrictions, enabled trading functionality, and the fund's contractual terms. 3. Komainu's Origins and Its Relationship with Nomura Group Komainu, which plays an important role in this financial infrastructure, is an institutional digital asset custody company based in Jersey, a British Crown Dependency. Komainu was established in 2020 as a joint venture involving three companies: Japan's Nomura Holdings, European digital asset manager CoinShares, and digital asset security technology company Ledger. Each founding company brought a different area of expertise. Nomura Holdings is a major financial group with extensive experience in securities trading, asset management, and institutional financial services. CoinShares is a leading European digital asset manager specializing in the development and management of exchange-traded products (ETPs) linked to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Ledger provides hardware wallets and security technologies designed to protect private keys and digital assets. Komainu was established by combining expertise in traditional finance, digital asset investment management, and security technology. In other words, Komainu is not simply a cryptocurrency storage provider. It offers custody infrastructure designed to enable institutional investors to securely hold and manage digital assets. However, Nomura Holdings' involvement in establishing Komainu does not mean that Nomura Securities' existing clearing or settlement systems are directly involved in the Aviva Investors initiative. Likewise, the three founding companies should not be assumed to be directly responsible for the fund's investment management or collateral transactions. 4. Komainu and Hidden Road: Using BlackRock's BUIDL as Collateral An important connection emerges from the relationship between Komainu and Hidden Road involving BlackRock's BUIDL fund. The two companies announced an initiative to support the use of BUIDL, BlackRock's tokenized investment fund, as eligible collateral under triparty collateral management agreements. BUIDL is a tokenized fund investing in US dollar-denominated assets such as short-term US Treasury securities, cash, and repurchase agreements. Under this arrangement, eligible institutional investors can hold BUIDL within Komainu's custody environment while using those holdings as collateral for Hidden Road's prime brokerage services. Prime brokerage refers to financial services provided to institutional investors, including hedge funds, covering market access, clearing-related services, financing, and collateral management. In practical terms, this structure allows institutional investors to use the collateral value of their BUIDL holdings to support trading activity and access financing without selling the fund shares. Komainu handles custody and collateral management, while Hidden Road provides prime brokerage services, allowing custody and trading functions to remain separate. This separation is important because it can reduce risks associated with directly transferring assets to a trading counterparty. It may also allow investors to continue holding income-generating short-term financial assets while using those assets as collateral for financial transactions. However, the extent to which BUIDL can be used as collateral, as well as the amount of financing available, depends on contractual arrangements, collateral valuations, haircuts, credit assessments, and the legal structure of the security interests. The significance of this example is that tokenized fund shares can serve not only as investment products but also as collateral within institutional financial markets. 5. Ripple Prime and Institutional Clearing Markets Following Ripple's acquisition of Hidden Road, the business has been operating under the Ripple Prime brand. Ripple Prime provides institutional services including prime brokerage, clearing access, financing, and collateral management. What makes this development particularly noteworthy is that Ripple is expanding beyond financial asset tokenization on XRPL into the infrastructure supporting institutional financial transactions. One of the important functions of prime brokerage is providing clearing-related services. When institutional investors trade across multiple exchanges and markets, they must manage trade records, margin requirements, collateral, and settlement obligations across different venues. Prime brokers such as Ripple Prime can provide clearing access, collateral management, and financing services, helping institutions reduce operational complexity and improve capital efficiency. Under certain conditions, cross-margining may also allow institutions to manage margin requirements more efficiently by considering multiple positions or transactions together. However, cross-margining does not automatically apply across all markets or asset classes. Its scope depends on contractual arrangements, clearinghouse rules, risk management models, and collateral eligibility requirements. The Difference Between Clearing and Final Settlement It is important to distinguish between clearing-related services provided by prime brokers, clearing conducted by central counterparties (CCPs), and final settlement carried out through banks or securities settlement systems. Clearing involves the confirmation and management of obligations, margin requirements, and collateral following the execution of trades. A central counterparty becomes the contractual counterparty to eligible cleared transactions and manages counterparty credit risk among its clearing participants. Final settlement, by contrast, refers to the completion of the transfer of funds, securities, or other assets under the applicable legal framework and settlement system rules. Even when Ripple Prime centralizes aspects of trade and clearing management for its clients, this does not mean that Ripple Prime itself acts as the CCP for every transaction. The ultimate transfer of funds and securities may occur through banks, securities settlement systems, central bank payment systems, or blockchain networks, depending on the relevant asset and market structure. In its announcement regarding the acquisition of Hidden Road, Ripple outlined plans to migrate post-trade activities to XRPL. However, this should not be interpreted as confirmation that all clearing and settlement functions are already operating on XRPL. A key question going forward is how on-chain asset management through XRPL can be connected with Ripple Prime's off-chain clearing, collateral management, and financing services. 6. Connecting Aviva Investors' Liquidity Fund to Collateral Markets There is an important common element between Aviva Investors' tokenization initiative and the use of BlackRock's BUIDL as collateral. Komainu is involved in both arrangements. In the BUIDL initiative, Komainu and Hidden Road announced a model in which tokenized fund holdings maintained within Komainu's custody environment can be used as collateral for prime brokerage services. Meanwhile, Aviva Investors has established a framework for tokenizing liquidity fund shares on XRPL. If Aviva Investors' tokenized fund shares were eventually recognized as eligible collateral by Ripple Prime or other financial service providers, a collateral management model similar to the BUIDL arrangement could potentially be developed. For example, an institutional investor could hold tokenized Aviva Investors fund shares with Komainu and use those holdings as collateral to access Ripple Prime's trading or financing services. In such a structure, investors could utilize the financial value of their fund shares without having to sell them. Collateral valuation, pledging, release, and margin shortfall management could potentially be handled through systems connecting on-chain asset records with off-chain risk management infrastructure. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that Aviva Investors' tokenized fund shares have been accepted as eligible collateral by Ripple Prime. Nor has a new triparty collateral management agreement specifically covering Aviva Investors' tokenized fund shares been confirmed between Komainu and Ripple Prime. Therefore, this remains a potential future development based on the precedent established by the BUIDL initiative. 7. XRPL's Potential Role in Connecting Collateral, Credit, and Settlement Markets Another important area to consider is the potential integration of tokenized financial assets with stablecoins. For example, financial institutions could potentially use fund shares issued on XRPL as collateral to obtain short-term financing. Komainu could provide custody and collateral management services, while Ripple Prime could provide trading access, financing, and clearing-related services. The transfer of funds could potentially involve bank deposits or regulated stablecoins such as RLUSD. If such an arrangement were implemented, financial institutions could use tokenized financial assets as collateral without selling them, supporting institutional credit markets and liquidity management. Furthermore, connecting asset transfers on XRPL with payment settlement systems could improve post-trade efficiency, streamline collateral transfers, and potentially reduce settlement risk. However, using tokenized assets as collateral requires appropriate collateral eligibility assessments, valuations, legally enforceable security interests, enforcement procedures, and clearing arrangements. An on-chain transfer of a token does not necessarily constitute the legal transfer of a security interest or the completion of final interbank settlement. It is also necessary to distinguish between on-chain settlement using stablecoins and interbank settlement using central bank money. Central bank money is an important settlement asset for interbank transactions, but legal finality does not always require settlement in central bank money. The legal effect of settlement depends on the settlement system, asset type, contractual framework, and applicable law. Therefore, properly integrating existing financial regulations and market infrastructure with blockchain technology remains essential. From this perspective, XRPL's potential role extends beyond simply tokenizing financial products. By supporting the issuance, transfer, and management of tokenized financial assets and connecting them with prime brokerage, clearing, and settlement infrastructure, XRPL could contribute to greater efficiency in institutional financial markets. 8. Conclusion — From Tokenization to Institutional Financial Infrastructure The Aviva Investors and Ripple initiative involves tokenizing shares of a sterling-denominated liquidity fund on XRPL. Aviva Investors manages the fund, while BNY provides custody of its underlying assets. Licuido provides the tokenization infrastructure utilizing XRPL, and Komainu participates in digital asset custody. Komainu was established through a joint venture involving Nomura Holdings, CoinShares, and Ledger, bringing together expertise from traditional finance and digital asset markets. Separately, Komainu and Hidden Road announced a triparty collateral management model supporting BlackRock's BUIDL as collateral. This initiative demonstrates how tokenized fund shares can be incorporated into institutional trading and financing arrangements. Ripple's acquisition of Hidden Road and the subsequent development of Ripple Prime have also expanded Ripple's presence in prime brokerage, clearing-related services, financing, and collateral management. If Aviva Investors' tokenized fund shares were eventually integrated with Ripple Prime's collateral management and financing services, this could contribute to the development of financial infrastructure connecting tokenization, collateral utilization, trading, clearing, and settlement. The key point is that XRPL is not merely a network for transferring cryptocurrencies. It is already being used as infrastructure for tokenizing traditional financial assets, with the potential to connect those assets to institutional financial markets. If Komainu's custody services, Ripple Prime's prime brokerage capabilities, and XRPL's tokenization infrastructure become more closely integrated, they could support the development of new collateral and credit markets that enable financial institutions to utilize their existing assets more efficiently. However, a direct connection between Aviva Investors' tokenized fund shares and Ripple Prime has not been confirmed. Likewise, an increase in tokenized assets on XRPL does not automatically translate into greater XRP settlement demand or a higher XRP price. The impact on XRP's actual utility will depend on whether and how XRP is used in trading, collateral management, liquidity provision, and settlement. Taken together, these developments illustrate the potential emergence of a new financial infrastructure connecting the tokenization of traditional financial assets with institutional collateral, credit, and clearing markets. Big news as Aviva Investors announces the launch of a tokenized share class of the Aviva Investors Sterling (GBP) Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger. The Sterling (GBP) Liquidity Fund is Aviva Investors’ largest fund at around £22 billion in assets under management, and this move marks an expansion of Aviva Investors’ tokenised fund offering, following the launch of its tokenized USD Liquidity Fund in July. Investors receive the same protections as those in the conventional fund, which was initially launched in 2002. Markets are moving to 24/7 access and real-time settlement. This is what that looks like in practice. For professional investors only. Capital at risk. ripple.com/ripple-press/aviv…

This is a fascinating development. I believe the significance of the partnership between Arf and Ripple goes beyond accelerating cross-border payments. More importantly, it has the potential to transform the credit infrastructure that supports international settlements. What makes Arf particularly interesting is that it is not a blockchain bridge provider, but a non-bank financial services company specializing in short-term liquidity and credit facilities for cross-border payments. Even more importantly, Arf's business model extends beyond the XRP Ledger (XRPL), with the potential to operate across multiple blockchains and payment networks. Blockchain technology has evolved as an infrastructure for transferring value. Arf's model represents the next stage of this evolution, enabling the liquidity required for cross-border payments to be lent, repaid, and recycled on-chain. At the heart of this model is a clear division of responsibilities: Arf handles credit assessment and risk management, XRPL's native lending protocol is designed to facilitate loan management and repayments, and RLUSD serves as a settlement and liquidity asset circulating within the system. If successfully implemented, this structure could improve capital efficiency, accelerate liquidity recycling, and reduce reliance on traditional pre-funded accounts in cross-border payments. I see this partnership as an important step toward the evolution of blockchain into an integrated financial infrastructure connecting credit provision, liquidity management, and global settlement.

In October 2026, Japan's financial institutions and blockchain-related companies have announced a series of initiatives aimed at developing next-generation financial infrastructure. Among the most notable developments are the cross-border stablecoin settlement pilot conducted by Japan's three megabanks, the partnership between TISI and Fireblocks, the launch of Fireblocks Liquidity Market, and Project Trinity's proof of concept for Delivery versus Payment (DvP) settlement of security tokens. Although these initiatives are being developed independently and serve different purposes, they reveal a common direction when viewed from a broader financial infrastructure perspective. That direction is the integration of bank-led fund management, stablecoin issuance and circulation, financial asset trading, access to global liquidity markets, and blockchain-based settlement. Looking ahead, another important development will be connecting these digital settlement infrastructures with banks' credit provision capabilities, including lending and trade finance. Together, these developments suggest a gradual transition from isolated blockchain applications toward a more interconnected financial ecosystem, where traditional banking services, tokenized assets, stablecoins, and global liquidity markets can operate together.

This is a very interesting development. I have analyzed it from several perspectives and put together the following overview. Japan’s Three Megabanks, TISI, and Fireblocks: Building the Next Generation of Financial Infrastructure — From Stablecoin Payments to Global Liquidity Markets and Credit Provision On October 16, 2026, Japan’s three megabanks—MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), and Mizuho Bank—announced the results of a proof-of-concept (PoC) involving international settlements using stablecoins. What makes this initiative particularly significant is that it goes beyond simply using blockchain technology to accelerate cross-border payments. The broader opportunity lies in developing financial infrastructure that connects banks’ credit provision capabilities, stablecoin-based settlements, and global liquidity markets. An important part of understanding this emerging financial ecosystem is the relationship between Japan’s major IT services provider, TISI, and the U.S.-based digital asset infrastructure company Fireblocks. 1. Japan’s Three Megabanks Develop a Shared Settlement Infrastructure The PoC adopted a trust-based stablecoin structure in which bank deposits serve as the underlying funds held and managed as trust assets. Traditionally, interbank and cross-border fund transfers have required transactions to pass through multiple financial institutions and payment systems. However, a shared stablecoin settlement infrastructure could allow customers of different banks to transfer funds directly through blockchain networks. TISI is responsible for developing the technological infrastructure supporting this initiative. As a major Japanese IT services provider specializing in financial and enterprise systems, TISI has been involved in building stablecoin issuance systems and wallet infrastructure for the project. In other words, banks provide financial services, while TISI develops the technological infrastructure that enables those services. 2. The Significance of the Partnership Between TISI and Fireblocks On July 31, 2026, TISI announced a reseller agreement with Fireblocks, a U.S.-based company providing digital asset infrastructure. Fireblocks specializes in technologies that enable financial institutions to securely manage digital asset wallets and transfer digital assets. One particularly important aspect of this partnership is that TISI has already integrated Fireblocks technology into its own multi-token platform. Furthermore, in April 2025, SMBC, TIS, Ava Labs, and Fireblocks announced a joint initiative to explore the commercialization of stablecoins. These developments demonstrate that Japanese banks, TISI, and Fireblocks have already established relationships focused on developing stablecoin-based financial services. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether Fireblocks technology was directly used in the latest international settlement PoC conducted by the three megabanks. 3. Fireblocks Develops a Global Liquidity Market In October 2026, Fireblocks also announced a new service called Liquidity Market. B2C2 and Zodia Markets are participating as the initial liquidity providers. Both companies specialize in digital asset trading and liquidity provision for financial institutions and institutional investors. An important distinction here is that issuing and transferring stablecoins is fundamentally different from exchanging them into the currencies required for settlement. For example, even if Japanese banks issue yen-denominated stablecoins, payments to overseas companies may require conversion into U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins or other currencies. Without sufficient market liquidity, large transactions could cause significant price movements or make it difficult to exchange the required amounts at acceptable prices. Fireblocks Liquidity Market addresses this challenge by enabling financial institutions to request quotes from multiple liquidity providers, compare execution conditions, and execute transactions. The platform also provides centralized management of counterparty credit limits, collateral or margin requirements, and account balances. This represents an important expansion of Fireblocks’ role. Rather than focusing exclusively on digital asset custody and transfers, Fireblocks is also developing infrastructure that allows financial institutions to access global liquidity markets. 4. Connecting Bank Credit Provision with On-Chain Settlement When we consider the initiatives of Japan’s three megabanks, TISI, and Fireblocks together, a potential model for the next generation of financial infrastructure begins to emerge. Consider a Japanese company exporting goods to an overseas buyer. Exporters often face a delay between shipping goods and receiving payment. To address this, a bank can assess the credit risk associated with an export receivable and purchase that receivable, allowing the exporter to obtain funds before the original payment date. The bank continues to perform traditional functions such as credit assessment, risk management, and financing. However, once the bank approves the transaction, the payment could be executed through blockchain-based stablecoin settlement infrastructure, such as the systems being developed by TISI. If the transaction requires conversion into another currency, the financial institution could potentially access liquidity providers such as B2C2 and Zodia Markets through Fireblocks Liquidity Market. Furthermore, integration with trade information platforms such as TradeWaltz could eventually connect export and import documentation, trade receivables, bank credit provision, and payment settlement within a more unified financial infrastructure. This development shares certain conceptual similarities with the direction of the XRPL Lending Protocol and Canton Network. The underlying idea is to allow financial institutions to assess and manage credit risk off-chain while using blockchain infrastructure to execute asset transfers and financial settlements on-chain. However, it is important to distinguish between the counterparty credit limit management provided by Fireblocks Liquidity Market and the lending or credit provision performed by banks. These are different financial functions. It is also important to emphasize that direct integration between TISI’s settlement infrastructure, Fireblocks Liquidity Market, and TradeWaltz has not yet been officially confirmed. Conclusion The international stablecoin settlement PoC conducted by Japan’s three megabanks, the partnership between TISI and Fireblocks, and the development of Fireblocks Liquidity Market are separate initiatives. Nevertheless, when viewed from the perspective of the broader financial ecosystem, these initiatives have the potential to complement one another. Banks would remain responsible for credit assessment and credit provision. TISI would develop the stablecoin issuance and settlement infrastructure. Fireblocks would support digital asset custody, transfers, and access to global liquidity markets. If these capabilities are successfully integrated, they could form a new financial infrastructure connecting bank credit provision, stablecoin settlements, and foreign exchange transactions. One of the most important developments to watch is how TISI’s multi-token platform may eventually interact with Fireblocks Liquidity Market. Another key question is whether yen-denominated stablecoins issued through the three megabanks’ joint initiative will become available for trading and settlement within global liquidity markets. The evolution of blockchain-based finance is moving beyond simply making international payments faster. It is increasingly focused on connecting bank credit provision, trade finance, asset management, liquidity provision, and financial settlement within a more integrated financial ecosystem. Taken together, these developments suggest that Japanese banks could play an important role in the emergence of next-generation financial infrastructure.
