⚠️ Warning: Sensitive content This video shows a group affiliated with ISIS capturing Syrian Arab Army soldier Shadi Hamada, from the Midan district of Damascus, while he was being held prisoner in the village of al-Jafra in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor. Judging by the accents of the men heard in the footage, they appear to come from different Arab countries, most notably Egypt, Morocco, and Libya. The group humiliates the soldier and forces him to kiss their feet on the grounds that they are “mujahideen,” while calling him a “Nusayri”,na reference to the Alawite sect. But Shadi Hamada was Sunni. That alone exposes the sectarian mindset behind these fighters: the assumption that anyone serving in the Syrian Arab Army must automatically be Alawite. Despite Shadi’s pleas for mercy, and despite insisting that he had not fired a single bullet at the fighters, they ultimately executed him. This footage is part of a documentation series highlighting the role of foreign fighters who came from outside Syria and took part in operations targeting Syrians serving in the Syrian Arab Army, as well as the Takfiri and sectarian rhetoric that accompanied those acts. The purpose is historical preservation, source documentation, and making such material available for research.
