Labour in its manifesto promised not to increase VAT. The promise was related not just to VAT rates but to VAT as a whole.
If Labour had imposed VAT on food products, everyone would say that this was a breach of the manifesto commitment. In the budget Healey raised another £425m by extending VAT to private hire taxi fares. This is also a breach of Labour's manifesto commitment regarding VAT. That £425m will come straight out of the pockets of taxi users.
"Labour will not increase taxes on working people, which is why we will not increase National Insurance, the basic, higher, or additional rates of Income Tax, or VAT," was the precise wording in the manifesto.

Top law firm Pinsent Masons has revealed that proposals in the budget for UK corporate tax “simplification” for business investment will actually lead to greater complexity.
“Although the new consultation opens with some good jargon around simplification and HMRC and taxpayers working together for a brighter future, the overall impression is one of yet another ‘simplification leading to even greater complexity’ exercise. Despite headlining as a budget providing ‘breathing space’ for business, the consultation hints that any such breathing space may be short-lived,” said Eloise Walker of Pinsent Masons.
It's no surprise that Britain has the longest and most complex tax code in the world.

Strong Reform wins overnight!
In Worksop East (Bassetlaw), we went from nothing to 46%, with Labour sinking from 74% to 37%.
We also smashed the Lib Dems in a ward in Halton, Cheshire, which they won in May this year.
The Westminster bubble is as out of touch as ever.
Sadly, we did lose one ward in Dudley. We won 872 votes, Labour won 874 - and Restore took 159.
The next election will be existential for Britain. I’ll deport everyone who is here illegally. Vote Restore, get Labour.

“We vote for freebies, & gaily assume that the bill will fall on someone else: landlords, banks, energy companies.
“We seem unable to process the concept that all these taxes, in the end, fall on us. Your bank will no more pay the bank levy than your house pays the council tax, your car the excise duty, or your TV the licence fee. You will pay as a depositor or a borrower.
“All taxes fall on human beings.”

A 1000 days to prepare for war
So Labour is spending no money on national resiliency
They're not even going to think about spending more money on defence until {checks notes} 1000 days from now
Then they intend to cook the books using PFI because they want to spend even more money on welfare instead
In the meantime they're going to cut the day to day spending of the MOD including on {checks notes} training
I'm sorry but you can safely ignore everything they are saying as it's nonsense
When it comes to stated Vs revealed preferences this Labour government is clear on what they think is important
Btw that's not to say you shouldn't prepare for the worst - you should - however that's because the Tories and Labour have so buggered up the energy system we will likely have blackouts
So be prepared for the outcome of the unipartys war on this country not anything Russia might do

Reform UK GAIN from Labour.
Changes w/ 2023.
That’s more like it!
The entire fiscal position of the British government is imploding and Labour just wants to spend more money on welfare
🚨 SUMMARY: The OBR forecasts following John Healey's Budget
- Welfare spending will rise to £431.3bn by 2030/31 - an increase of £97.5bn a year in cash terms
- This includes £209.8bn on pensioner benefits, £110.7bn on Universal Credit, £69.6bn on disability benefits, £13.9bn on Child Benefit and £27.2bn on other welfare
- Inflation will peak at 3.75% in early 2027, up from the earlier prediction of 2%
- UK GDP growth will slow from around 1.25% in 2026 to 1% in 2027, before climbing to 1.6% in 2031
- Average UK unemployment will rise to 5.1% across 2026 and 2027
- The Employment Rights Act will "likely" have a negative economic impact because of reduced flexibility and greater uncertainty for businesses
- The landlord tax increases (property income) could contribute to a long-term rise in private rents and discourage landlords from entering the market
- Real household disposable income per person will be around 0.75% lower in 2030-31 than it expected in March 2026
- Higher earnings and frozen tax thresholds will increase income tax and National Insurance receipts by £9bn in 2026-27 and around £8bn on average in subsequent forecast years compared with March
- Net migration is forecast to fall to 120,000 in the year to mid-2026, then gradually rise to 230,000 by the year to mid-2031
- Nominal weekly earnings growth will slow to around 3.5% in 2026, then average roughly 2.25% a year
- Andy Burnham's first-time buyer scheme could raise house prices by increasing demand without enough new homes being built
