Dnipro's train station has been hit two more times since this happened, with the latest strike happening just a few minutes ago.
At least 14 dead in Dnipro following a Russian jet-powered drone strike on a railway platform where dozens of people were waiting. There is horrifying footage showing at least half a dozen bodies lying on the platform.

It was the most constructive call with Putin since 2021. Why was it misreported by @FT so badly? Euro diplos often want to derail initiatives they don’t like or simply blabber 3nd hand gossip. Putin doesn’t need to lecture @alexstubb Stubb on Russian history. Stubb in particular and Finnish leaders in general know that history. The key deliverable from the call was Baltic deescalation and a new, functional channel run by competent people, for a change, to support the Ukraine talks. Kyiv and DC were on board and involved. EU rightfully wasn’t. Two postures emerge in Europe: in Britain, Denmark and Poland some think that the longer the war lasts the more Russia is drained. Elsewhere there’s another view: the longer the war lasts the greater the potential for conflict with Russia, whose armaments industry grows by the month.
For my English-speaking followers, let's get the facts straight about the Stubb–Støre call with Putin. New reporting from Finland provides important details missing from much of the international debate. Some of the initial accusations now look rather premature. First, why did the call happen? According to President Stubb, Ukraine's peace negotiations were close to collapsing last week, with relations between Kyiv and Washington in serious trouble. Finnish sources suggest there was even a risk of the US disengaging from the process. At Zelenskyy's request, Finland and Norway organised the Oslo talks with American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside other European representatives. The subsequent call to Putin was prepared with Ukraine and the US. According to Finnish sources, key allies were informed beforehand and briefed afterwards. Helsinki also wanted Ukraine to publicly confirm its support for the initiative. Zelenskyy has since explicitly defended the call and praised its transparency. Second, the controversy surrounding European coordination deserves clarification. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused Finland and Norway of acting independently and failing to coordinate with other European countries. But Stubb and Støre have both stated that allies were informed in advance and received detailed briefings afterwards. New reporting from Finnish news agency STT supports their account. There is an important distinction between not being informed, not being consulted on the decision, and fundamentally disagreeing with that decision. Frederiksen's criticism increasingly appears to reflect a disagreement over whether direct contact with Putin should happen at all, rather than simply a lack of notification. Her initial framing therefore risks creating a misleading impression of an uncoordinated diplomatic operation. Political disagreement should not be confused with evidence that Finland and Norway acted behind their allies' backs. Third, what actually happened during the call? Finnish broadcaster Yle and news agency STT have challenged the Financial Times' account of Putin delivering a lengthy history lecture to passive Nordic listeners. Their sources describe a substantive exchange in which Stubb and Støre questioned Putin about the upcoming Abu Dhabi negotiations and stressed that prolonging the war would not diminish European support for Ukraine. Freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea, keeping maritime routes open and Russia's shadow fleet were also discussed. Finnish-Russian bilateral relations reportedly were not discussed at all. The parties agreed to keep the communication channel available. Fourth, the risks were understood from the beginning. Finnish sources say criticism and possible Russian propaganda exploitation were anticipated. One source described the initiative as values-based realism, which sometimes requires accepting political risks and their consequences. This was a calculated decision, not an improvised attempt to normalise relations with Moscow. Zelenskyy has also reminded critics that Putin's diplomatic isolation effectively ended with Trump's Alaska summit in 2025. Other European governments have maintained contacts with Russia, sometimes without comparable transparency towards Ukraine. Ukraine requested diplomatic assistance, and Finland and Norway responded in coordination with Kyiv and Washington. Supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary must also mean supporting it in the ways Ukraine actually asks for. That includes diplomacy. Europe needs military strength, economic pressure and diplomatic influence. These are complementary instruments, not competing alternatives.

Extraordinary scenes right now in Russian-held Oleshky, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman is chatting with local residents. Evacuation from the frontline city should begin very soon, Ukrainian MP said this morning 527 people have asked to go back to Ukrainian-controlled territory.
We are in Oleshky! The Ukrainian delegation has safely reached the city. The ceasefire has been in effect for 80 hours and remains in place. I am currently on the ground, speaking with local residents to hear about their needs and understand what kind of assistance they need most. I will share more details later. This work is being carried out in accordance with the agreements reached with Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Yana Lantratova, with the support and coordination of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump @FLOTUS

1/14 The war is becoming harder to sustain and harder to end. Kyiv is recovering territory while Russia destroys the economic foundations of its resistance. Washington explores a bargain w/ Moscow; Europe pays more but struggling to shape the settlement. Essential Ukraine #32. 🧵

My wife's Aunt an Oleshky native, left it a bit more than a year ago. Even back then, it was extremely confusing, they were all forced to accept russian passports if they wanted financial or humanitarian aid assistance, without getting into the details of russian atrocities, her way to a Ukraine controlled portion of Ukraine was dangerous and she went through multiple filtration checkpoints where their phones were checked for suspicious communications. The road was very long and was via Crimea as well to one of the Baltic states and back to Ukraine. I can't imagine the state of the people who are left there right now and what will they have to go through to get back to normal lives.

"I estimate Ukrainian losses at between 300 and 400,000 dead, but the estimates are much more difficult." Genuinely hard to wrap your head around the scale of the demographic cataclysm that Ukraine is already experiencing and will experience in the future.
Kherson: Monitoring Compliance with the Ceasefire ☝️ “The most important thing is peace.” These are the words we hear most often from people in the Kherson region today. During his conversations with local residents, my Representative, Vasyl Donets, heard numerous requests to continue efforts aimed at securing the ceasefire. For the second day in a row, we have been monitoring and verifying compliance with the ceasefire. ❗️The ceasefire has had a tangible impact on the city itself. Kherson, which had been under constant shelling, has literally come back to life. There are more people on the streets, and urban life has picked up. People are going outside without fear, taking walks and enjoying the autumn sunshine. What may be an ordinary part of everyday life for some is now the greatest wish of Kherson residents. Let me remind you that, as of 12:00, the Ukrainian and Russian sides continue to fully honor the agreement. The ceasefire began on October 27 at 03:00 Kyiv time (04:00 Moscow time) and will remain in effect until November 1 at 22:59. This will enable us to carry out a humanitarian mission that we are conducting jointly with Yana Lantratova, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, with the mediation and coordination of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump (@FLOTUS). As head of the Ukrainian negotiating team, I will keep the public and the media promptly informed about the progress of the mission and compliance with the agreement. I understand just how much attention this issue is receiving. ‼️But behind all the negotiations, agreements and diplomatic efforts, there are, first and foremost, people — their lives, their safety and their hope for a peaceful future. And it is for their sake that we must continue this work.

❗️30 hours of the ceasefire in Oleshky have passed without a single incident. This has been made possible, in particular, by ongoing communication between me and Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights. We remain in contact and coordinate efforts to implement the agreements reached. I would like to express my special gratitude to First Lady of the United States Melania Trump (@FLOTUS), who is personally dedicating her time and attention to this humanitarian mission and to helping civilians in Oleshky. Her direct involvement and coordination of efforts between the parties are an important part of this process. ☝️I also thank her entire team for their consistent support, ongoing communication, and every effort they have made. Our shared goal is to ensure that civilians in Oleshky receive assistance and to create the conditions for the safe departure of those who need it. We continue our work. What matters most is people’s lives and safety.

Ushakov adds that Western Europe must also be involved in Ukraine peace negotiations (this is a major shift in Kremlin positioning). “After Anchorage, there was an impression that the American administration could dictate something and make Kiev comply, but so far, that hasn’t worked.” “It’s not enough to talk only to Kiev, we need to talk to all of Europe, which fully supports Kiev, perhaps [Western] Europe’s position is of crucial importance here.”
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov has cautioned against expecting significant results from the first Russia-US-Ukraine meeting following the prolonged break in negotiations. “You won’t resolve much at the first meeting, it will probably be more of an exploratory meeting,” he said. Ushakov added that Moscow would be ready to resume talks after 4 November, while warning that considerable work remained before a peace agreement could be reached.

[...]" ilpost.it/2019/10/06/voto-ai…
