Paul Newman told John Turturro it took him 25 years to relax on screen.
They were making The Color of Money, and Newman invited him to sit in his trailer. Turturro said he could've fooled him, he was a huge fan of The Hustler. Newman said he was always working too hard. Turturro says you can see it, Newman actually got better as he got older.
If Paul Newman needed 25 years, nobody should feel bad about still figuring it out.

Michael Mann’s Thief (1981) is one of the most visually stunning crime films ever made.

Gerry Rafferty should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for this masterpiece alone.

My favorite Robert Plant song. Including Led Zeppelin. Back when music videos were art.

PREDATOR (1987) brilliantly turns the 80s action hero fantasy on its head. A squad of heavily armed commandos suddenly become prey, their weapons and military training useless against an invisible hunter. One of the smartest genre switches in cinema.
Are there any movies where a plot twist completely changes the genre of the film?
Not just a twist that changes the story, but one that makes the movie feel like an entirely different genre. A drama that suddenly becomes horror, a mystery that turns into romance, or a crime thriller that transforms into sci-fi.
What are the best examples? They have to be genuinely good movies, too.

"The Exorcist" is the GOAT of horror films. Even something as simple as Chris MacNeil’s walk home is chilling. Every frame—from the trick-or-treaters to the nuns to a blood-red door and Father Karras’s crisis of faith drowned out by a jet—quietly signals the nightmare ahead.

But my all time favorite needle drop in a movie is the way Spike Lee used Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” in Malcolm X. It’s so perfect. I can’t imagine anything else playing over this sequence. So classic.

Jeff Daniels says Jack Nicholson told him on his first day of Terms of Endearment that film is not Broadway, and that is why he shows up ready on take one
"He said, what have you done?"
"And he said, well, this ain't Broadway."
"This is the pro game."
"I just came in ready to serve the story, not you."
Daniels was 28 with one movie behind him, and Nicholson sized him up in a sentence. Plenty of young actors would hear that as a put-down and sulk about it. He heard it as the job description and has been working that way for more than forty years.

I miss movie trailers when the narrator sounded like he was warning you about the movie.

Kubrick turns this section of Stephen King’s novel into pure anticipation: the slow thumping, the increasingly intense music and the gradual transformation of the woman reveal the horror piece by piece.
