I went to Jim Dean’s to get the 37s put on my truck, and I walked away talking about something much bigger than tires. These are outrageously good people. The kind of people you want in your corner. And they have raised a brilliant young woman with a remarkable head on her shoulders, a testimony about the goodness of God, and the courage to say what she has actually witnessed. What she told me about the liberal circles around her was striking. She described people who claim to oppose racism while making assumptions about Black and brown Americans based on their skin, their last names, and their presumed need for somebody else to rescue them. That contradiction deserves scrutiny. You cannot preach equality while quietly assuming brown people are illegal immigrants. You cannot preach empowerment while treating Black Americans as though we are intellectually or socially helpless without your intervention. And you certainly cannot call that enlightenment simply because the paternalism comes wrapped in fashionable politics. In this video, I share our conversation and ask a harder question: What happens when prejudice learns the language of compassion? Because racism does not become benign merely because the person practicing it believes their intentions are noble. Sometimes the most insidious prejudice is the kind its possessor cannot recognize in the mirror. Listen carefully to what this young woman experienced and make your own judgment. God has an interesting way of putting conversations in your path when you least expect them. I went looking for tires.
