Allowance.
Disability Justice adds an important question: who is most likely to carry the
consequences of reform? Disabled children and families are not a single, uniform
group. Poverty, racism, gendered inequality, insecure housing, migration-related
barriers and unequal access to education, health and social care can overlap with
disability. These factors can affect both access to support and the impact of losing it.

Taking away financial support doesn’t take away a child’s needs.
Through my work at Disability Action Haringey, I see how hard D/deaf and Disabled people and families have to fight for support, and what it means when that support is missing.Together with Disability Action Haringey, I’m challenging Policy Exchange’s proposals on Child DLA because children’s needs, rights and everyday lives must come first.
This is a community perspective, not a formal policy document. It reflects the experiences shared with us and the questions these proposals need to answer.
What would losing financial support mean for a child? What additional pressures would fall on their family? Would reducing spending save money, or would it simply shift costs elsewhere? Families need better services alongside financial security.
They shouldn’t have to surrender one to fund the other.
