I was only 19 when I crossed a boundary that would eventually threaten to destroy my family. It started with an attraction I should never have entertained. My stepfather initially tried to keep his distance, but I kept pushing until our relationship crossed a line that could never be undone. What began as a secret between two people soon became something I struggled to hide. I became so attached that I even introduced him to some of my friends, pretending he was simply a man I admired. They had no idea about the truth behind our relationship. The biggest problem started when my mother announced that she wanted a divorce. I expected to feel relieved that our secret might finally have room to breathe. Instead, I panicked. I couldn't imagine him leaving my life. Then I made a decision that shocked everyone. I told my mother that if she divorced him, I would move in with him. She stared at me as though she hadn't heard correctly. "Are you serious? You would rather live with my husband than with your own mother?" I tried explaining that he understood me better and that I was old enough to decide where I wanted to live. But she wasn't buying it. The argument became louder. My mother accused me of disrespecting her, abandoning her and choosing a stranger over my own family. I stood my ground, even though I knew the real reason I wanted to stay with him. What my mother didn't know was that her daughter had been keeping a terrible secret with the very man she was preparing to divorce. She eventually walked away from the argument, completely heartbroken and confused.
