Who get caught, sure.
The intelligent, sober-minded, and conscientious criminal is a cliché at the heart of so many fun movies that I sometimes wonder if people realize it’s totally fake and in the real world crime is almost all dumb guys with poor impulse control. boxd.it/h6zc7X

In Star Trek, the Federation doesn't have money, but Picard mentions earning days of shore leave which you spend on the permanent vacation planet. But in an economy with no money somebody has to be rationing rooms at the resort. Because otherwise what would it mean to work for one day vs. a hundred to earn some consumption privilege? The concept of time off only make sense as a condition of continued employment, like if you skip work on the starship to go to the pleasure planet, you don't get to be on the starship anymore. But this relies on the idea that service in Starfleet is so prestigious that people submit to its own rules of service for fear of being kicked back down to the permanent UBI consumer class who don't do anything interesting.
Back in a 2020 podcast, I asked Ronald D. Moore, who wrote for Star Trek: TNG and DS9 (you might also know him from Battlestar Galactica) about the economics of Star Trek:

He'll always be Alan Shore to me.
Been watching Visionquest and it’s honestly solid — but the biggest mistake they made was letting James Spader play Ultron so well as a salty, bearded old man that I just can’t see him as a big, shiny robot anymore. This is, shockingly, the best version of Ultron to me now:

Why should you be allowed to hold onto money that could better be spent elsewhere? The gall of this schmuck.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes people owning RAM for their own PCs is a waste and instead should be saved for data centers "It’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."

Farewell to the 2nd best Star Trek Captain in TV history. May you continue to go where no one has gone before, if only to light the way!

Writing a contribution to philosophy of religion. What random phenomenon should I argue is more likely on theism than naturalism?

A local, open weight model I can train myself from scratch
Open weights are good. But maybe we should think about opening other elements in the stack too, like training corpora.

Lottocracy is all the rage among political philosophers, but it’s natural to be uneasy about an untried system. Advocates cite successful real-world mini-publics as evidence. How much confidence should these give us? I examine this in my latest paper: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

I like AirBnb when I travel with my fam — it’s always tough keeping the three of us in one room for more than a few days. But if I’m going to pay your month’s mortgage with a 4-day stay, then also pay a cleaning fee, I’ve got zero sympathy for you having to take out the trash.
JUST IN: Airbnb hosts threaten to strike after the company bans them from forcing guests to wash dishes, strip beds, or take out trash before checkout.

That and neuroticism
A friend says: "Academics tend to be massive conformists because success consists in the consensus opinion of one's peers. Investors or other business people tend to be much less conformist because success comes from being the first to do something no one else is doing, etc."

AI is a jobs program for philosophers.
AI IS AMAZING I know it's hip to worry about the decline in book reading and how chatbots will impoverish our brains. But TBH, this is not at all what I see. I wrote about how we're in this wild moment for intellectual flourishing and how all of us are the children of dancers.
