“What began as a blog has grown into an organisation helping shape conversations about Nigeria’s health system.”
Reflecting on the journey of @NigeriaHealthWatch at #FHC2026, Dr @Chikwe_Ihekweazu traced how knowledge became consciousness, consciousness became advocacy, and advocacy led to building an organisation committed to keeping critical health issues on the public agenda.
His story is a reminder that meaningful change begins with understanding a problem and finding the courage to act on it.

Innovation is transforming healthcare, from digital health solutions to new approaches to service delivery. But innovation alone is not enough.
The real test is whether these solutions improve health outcomes, expand access and reach the people who need them most.

Taken together, the five research studies point to gaps beyond enrolment numbers. How people access care, what they pay, the quality of care they receive, and why they stay or leave all shape how health insurance works in practice.
The studies also highlight the gap between policy and what happens on the ground, pointing to areas where implementation, accountability and the use of evidence need to improve.

When external health funding is reduced, what happens next matters. Speaking on Nigeria’s experience following cuts in USAID funding, our Managing Director, @VIhekweazu, highlighted the government’s response of about $200M, while noting that it remained far below the funding lost.
For her, the experience reinforces the need to rethink how international partnerships and domestic financing work together.

Our Managing Director, @VIhekweazu, stressed that countries must take greater ownership of financing their health systems. While international partnerships remain important, stronger domestic investment is essential for sustainable progress and better health outcomes.
Looking ahead to 2045, she offered a hopeful vision: “If we can all be prisoners of hope, that would be a good place to land by 2045.”

What happens when research does not shape policy?
The NHIA Global Convening will examine how health financing research can better inform the decisions shaping health insurance in Nigeria.
Through locally led research, the convening will bring evidence to questions such as what is working, what needs to improve, and how research can shape better decisions for Nigeria’s health financing system.

“Please support the local programme. They have always said it’s neglected. It’s actually neglected because you come to big meetings and nobody knows about it.” - Mrs Anita Gwom, Director, RLM, @Sightsavers.
She highlights the lack of awareness around river blindness reflects the very neglect the disease continues to face. She stresses the need to bring the conversation beyond policy spaces and into communities where people are affected and where community-led interventions are taking place.

For Mallam Abubakar Hassan, Director-General, @kadchma, the conversation about eliminating disease must also include the financial cost of illness.
He points to the example of a household spending ₦300,000 on treatment in Jagindi, stressing that such out-of-pocket expenses can place already vulnerable families under severe financial pressure.

Speaking on the need for stronger attention to neglected tropical diseases, Prof. Bello Yusuf Jamoh, Executive Secretary, @KadunaSPHCB, states that onchocerciasis should be approached with the goal of elimination, not simply reducing the number of cases.
He notes that the disease can have consequences beyond the eyes and skin, reinforcing the need for sustained attention to its prevention, detection and treatment.
