📢 The first participant was vaccinated today in Tumaini, a CEPI-funded pivotal Phase 2/3 clinical trial of vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus (BDBV).
The trial is part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s response to the devastating outbreak which has claimed more than 4,500 lives.
There is currently no approved vaccine to protect against BDBV. Tumaini, which means “hope” in Swahili, aims to close that gap. The trial will generate robust evidence about the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of multiple vaccine candidates that could contribute to curtailing the epidemic, saving lives, and strengthening preparedness for future BDBV outbreaks.
“There is still no licensed vaccine against Bundibugyo virus, and the cost of that absence is being counted in the DRC every day, in lives lost and in health workers who go to work without protection. Tumaini aims to change that”, explains @DrRHatchett , CEO of CEPI.
The first candidate to enter the trial is Ervebo. Preparations are underway for two CEPI-funded BDBV-specific vaccine candidates, under development by @moderna_tx and by the @UniofOxford in collaboration with @SerumInstIndia, to enter the trial shortly.
The @inrb_kinshasa and @UAntwerpen Global Health Institute co-lead and co-sponsor the trial, under the leadership and oversight of @MinSanteRDC.
Tumaini is supported by strategic, technical, scientific and operational leadership and expertise from partners including @AfricaCDC @WHO @MSF @Epicentre_MSF @ITMantwerp.
The trial is funded by CEPI’s Bundibugyo virus vaccine development programme, which, to date, is backed by @EU_Commission @StateDept, Fund for Science and Technology, Republic of Korea and CEPI’s core funding.

.@Fmohnigeria reported the first case in Nigeria of #Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus. The patient is in isolation, since the onset of symptoms and receiving necessary clinical care: bit.ly/487wX60
Contact tracing is ongoing. @WHO and partners are working with the governments of Nigeria, Kenya and the DRC to strengthen the overall outbreak response.
WHO urges all countries in the region to sustain a high level of readiness, which is essential to detect cases early, prevent onward transmission and protect health workers and communities.

PRESS STATEMENT
STAY INFORMED. STAY SAFE.
Public health is a shared responsibility, and the right information helps us all stay safe.
The Federal Government, working with the NCDC and relevant health authorities, is taking the necessary steps to protect public health and strengthen surveillance following the confirmation of an Ebola disease case in the FCT.
There is no need for panic. What matters is staying informed, practising good hand hygiene, knowing the symptoms and seeking guidance from public health authorities if you suspect exposure.
📌 Remember: Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person who is sick or has died, or contaminated materials. It does not spread before symptoms begin.
For reliable information or to report a suspected case, call the NCDC toll-free line 6232, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Let’s stay calm, rely on verified information and do our part to keep our communities safe.

@NigeriaGov has confirmed a case of Ebola in the FCT, in a patient who recently arrived in Abuja from Uganda. The patient is in isolation and receiving medical care.
Contact tracing has begun, with 44 close contacts identified. @Fmohnigeria urges Nigerians not to panic, but to stay vigilant, practise hand hygiene and report any suspected case or exposure to @NCDCgov on 6232. If you have symptoms, call before visiting a facility.

I agree
Apart from DG NAFDAC's highly inappropriate laughter, it is instructive that the successes she mentioned were financial achievements, the agency's maturity level, and membership in select bodies.
Of course, these are important, but when assessing an agency’s performance, we must always return to the mandate. Even the NAFDAC name emphasises that the agency’s main purpose is food and drugs administration and control. That is what we must judge NAFDAC by, in addition to the functions set out for it by law in Section 5 of its establishment Act, none of which are financial, by the way.
So the real test of success should be: What is the prevalence level of fake and substandard medicines, food, drinks and cosmetics in Nigeria?
Dora Akunyili brought down the prevalence of fake drugs from 41% to 10%. I believe that Paul Orhii further brought it down to 8%.
Today, the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria say that independent research shows that 50% of drugs in circulation are fake, falsified or substandard! NAFDAC disputes this and says it is only 15%, presumably based on its own sampling. But even if we were to go with NAFDAC’s figures, it is clear that we have regressed as a country.
The focus of an agency must always squarely be on its core mandate. Yes, financial performance, organisational maturity and membership of select groups are important but they pale into insignificance if the core mandate is not being delivered.
You can have a very well-run organisation with shiny financial and organisational statistics but that is not fulfilling its mandate. On the other hand, you could have an agency that is delivering its mandate and saving lives but is managed in a disorganised fashion. If the public were forced to choose only one out of the two agencies, the choice would be clear.
My honest opinion is that NAFDAC has been overwhelmed and needs help. NAFDAC should retain the setting of standards to ensure uniformity but the Constitution should be amended to enable state governments to enforce those standards jointly with NAFDAC.
Of course, it is only drugs and poisons that are on the Exclusive Legislative List. A state government can control food and drinks in its domain and the bigger killers now appear to be adulterated foods and drinks, even more than fake drugs. State governments should do more to protect the lives of their people.
