It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Oh. "Last week's meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank yielded no new answers for the developing world to the questions posed by a spreading Middle East war, continuing war in Ukraine, rising debt payments and a potential AI bubble."

✊🏾Last week in London, AFRODAD joined the Global Day of Action, challenging the policies of the @IMFNews and @WorldBankGroup. As these institutions met in Bangkok to shape financial policies with far-reaching consequences for people across the world, movements and communities were mobilising to demand a fairer global financial system.
⚠️ Across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America, Europe and North America, people are raising their voices against a system that too often places the burden of debt on citizens, undermines public services, and constrains countries’ development choices.
✳️ Our message is clear: Africa and the wider Global South need just and lasting debt solutions, including debt cancellation where necessary, to advance human rights, protect public resources, and finance sustainable, people-centred development.

Imagine if in 1943 FDR had decided that the US would stop helping Britain and instead would side with the Third Reich. That's a bit like what President Trump is now doing by cozying up to Russia as it tries to destroy Ukraine. Utterly shameful. A humiliating moment for the US.

Apparently Russian servers have been hit by a Ukrainian strike and immediately massive online hard right chatter has collapsed.
This particular chatter was in support of Germany’s AFD, their equivalent to Reform, but similar patterns are being seen in hard right movements everywhere, including the UK.
If anyone needed anymore evidence that Russia are driving a massive wave of hard right propaganda in Europe, this is it.
So, all you “patriots” - you’ve been duped by Russia, and you are about as far from patriotic as anyone can be. You are easily brainwashed though. This is how propaganda works.

Speaking at the inaugural Borrowers’ Platform Governing Council meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, Janet Zhou (@jayznotes), AFRODAD’s Executive Director, challenged the creditor-dominated global debt system and called for a more democratic, borrower-centred architecture grounded in international law.
“For long, creditors have set the rules, and these rules have failed to prevent the debt crisis and the debt distress that many of our countries face today.”
She underscored the importance of the Borrowers’ Platform in advancing existing efforts to strengthen borrower agency, including the Common African Position on Debt, adopted by the African Union earlier this year, and the recent launch of the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA).
AFRODAD has long advocated a shift from a creditor-centred debt architecture towards a democratic, rules-based system anchored in a United Nations Framework Convention on Sovereign Debt.
The Borrowers’ Platform is a critical part of this transformation complementing broader reform efforts and providing borrowing countries with a stronger collective voice in shaping the decisions that affect their economic futures. Borrowers must have a meaningful say in the rules governing their debt. The time for a fairer, more democratic global debt architecture is now.

We were warned. Four months ago top Himalayan experts reported the rate of ice loss doubling since 2000, with glaciers shrinking by fifth since 1990. “This isn’t a distant problem”they said. “It’s happening in real time”. They predicted “catastrophe”.

I continue to follow with deep concern the ongoing and escalating violence in the #HolyLand, where, in recent days, many civilians, both in the West Bank and in Gaza, have once again fallen victim. I make a heartfelt appeal for a return to negotiations to achieve a just political solution, founded on the equal dignity and equal rights of every human person. At the same time, I urge the rejection of further military actions and unilateral decisions, especially those that violate the respect for and the status quo of the holy places of every religion.
The government has announced cheaper public transport paid for in part by switching international climate finance to loans.

I will always be proud to have played a part in Keir Starmer’s journey to Number Ten.
In Government, it’s been a great honour to serve as International Development Minister, and in Keir Starmer’s Cabinet. I’m disappointed to be leaving but wish the Prime Minister and his new team every success.
Cutting the aid budget has been challenging and has required much soul searching, but I passionately believe thanks to the work we’ve done, we’re spending the money better than ever before. We have a modern strategy and approach, working in partnership with developing countries rather than in a paternalistic way, and keeping strong commitments on global health and humanitarian aid.
Thank you to all the brilliant people I’ve worked with in the UK and overseas. Thanks to them and to Keir Starmer the U.K. is once again a force for good internationally.

Okay, a few thoughts on the Ezra/@billmckibben podcast. It's v good that people like Bill are pushing enviro groups from "block bad stuff" to "unblock good stuff." But the rhetoric only goes so far, & the truth is that we are not set up to succeed on the supply-side agenda. 🧵
