An eerie map overlays Taiwan with the Normandy coast where Allied forces landed on D-Day in 1944. It reveals the scale and geography of a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan. A chilling comparison. Source: buff.ly/vJ9bxTj HT @RhodesMaps

I have a suspicion that Great Britain is going to be hit with a large scale energy infrastructure attack this winter The UK’s energy situation is precarious across every vertical and their capacity to prevent/contain/recover from a deliberate disruption is weak This presents an asymmetrical opportunity for “deniable” Russian cyberattack and sabotage operations Such hybrid attacks could be devastating for Britain but would be unlikely to trigger NATO Article 5 on their own. With other European nations reluctant to stick out their necks, a consequential Article 4 response would likely hinge on the US enforcing a hardline position Absent NATO, the UK’s ability to unilaterally respond is limited—most of Britain’s escalation ladder with Russia has already been climbed. There is little room for new sanctions or additional financial or military aid to Ukraine A direct military response is likely off the table as it might undermine the nation’s protections under Article 5, and the UK cannot sustain an escalation to direct conventional conflict A retaliation in kind is also hard to accomplish if your opponent is already acclimated to infrastructure disruption via Ukrainian “kinetic sanctions” and has hardened what systems aren’t regularly exploding This would undoubtedly be a huge propaganda win, with multiple Russian narratives simultaneously attributing the outages to British incompetence, winking at their own involvement, and offering aid via oil/gas exports if the British would be so kind as to stop supporting Ukrainian attacks against the same. This would build on established narratives condemning American “adventurism” in the Persian Gulf for British energy prices and other attempts to characterize US/EU allies as problematic or impotent At home, disruptions are unlikely to go over well as the British public questions the ability of the state to protect them, struggles with outages and price increases, and squabbles over who receives government assistance Ultimately, I don’t think anyone doubts Russian capacity to accomplish this type of attack. IMO the probability rests on if Russia thinks the blast radius can be limited to the UK Hope I’m wrong…

Something very cyberpunk about an entire island nation slowly becoming a chip fabbing guild

Getting tired of the labs trumpeting about how they’re building a superweapon and then having such rinky dink naïve security cultures You do realize that other nations are taking you at your word when you say you are halfway through the next Manhattan project right?
there is no question, none at all, that china has full access to all of openai & anthropic’s github/slack/docs today no disrespect to their independent research progress, but i wouldn’t be surprised if we see plausibly-deniable stolen arch methods in chinese oss models

Thank god we can find and intercept lost hikers as they mistakenly run away from rescue in dense forest!
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

I have been told there are no coherent anti-jamming or anti-detection standards for the most common US military MANET radios (Harris, Silvus, Doodle etc) Apparently there is also little to no desire for competitive trials under realistic adversary conditions Seems important…

DJI is mass rolling out 1280 x 1024 thermal imaging for its Mavic-sized drones while American 640 x 480 imagers are on 6+ mo lead times This should be a MASSIVE wake up call to the Western industrial base, fire alarms should be ringing.

This is funny because Shane is incredibly talented but the “prediction market” fig leaf is wearing really f*cking thin The instagram ads Kalshi is serving make counter strike skin gambling videos look responsible by comparison They’re targeting people living paycheck to paycheck with ads about how Kalshi can pay for a meal, groceries, or rent Showing people with relationship problems videos about how happy their spouse could be if their “trade” hits on Kalshi Suggesting to new moms how Kalshi can be part of their self care “me time” routine along with skincare and snacks This is overtly predatory and evil behavior The people betting their rent payment or their kid’s tuition are not sharps with special insight into the probability of world events. They are desperate people about to destroy their lives and families with gambling addiction Lately it’s also become clear that the existence of these markets are actively affecting outcomes and enabling corruption and bad actors The whole thing is so cynical and corrosive. It’s like what the Sackler family did with OxyContin Stop stripping the copper wire out of America

A lot of insane people gluetrapped by this post seem to be convinced that Palmer is breeding these things to eat palestinians or something

If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity. @tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202…
