Patrick O'Brien at the @WEHC2022. Sharp as always, he will be 90 years old next month. Still teaching us all. His work on warfare and fiscal capacity was well ahead of its time (economics is now catching up). Worthy of a Nobel Prize if you ask me. He is an example to us all.

Rainfall can be independent of potential outcomes and therefore the reduced form have a causal interpretation and yet not satisfy exclusion and thus the causal interpretation is very hard if not impossible to interpret. This is an example of how you need independence & exclusion
Update to my weather IV paper. IV assumes effect of instrument on Y works only through instrumented variable X. But scientists have linked weather to 192 variables, which makes exclusion restriction assumption implausible. This plot is just for rainfall: osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/9q…

PhD students in Econ: 👉your program teaches you a lot of theory and (if you're lucky) applied econometrics tools too. 👉one thing PhD programs don't seem to do a great job at teaching is how to write well. 👉 but make no mistake: writing well is critical to getting published!

We worked on this for a LONG time, and are elated that it found a great home. Check it out!
From Beuermann, @KiraboJackson, @Lnavarrosola & @franciscopardop: School effects are multidimensional. Effects on test scores are weakly related to effects on crime, teen births, and employment. (1/2)

super-interesting thread on a new wp by @Woessmann and co-authors -- schooling can influence religiosity big-time. Part of a lot of growing evidence that attitudes are highly malleable for young and adolescents; this goes down later. Would love to see some thoughts/theory why...
📢New WP🚨 “Can Schools Change Religious Attitudes? Evidence from German State Reforms of Compulsory Religious Education” w/ @BenjaminArold & @LarissaZierow Short answer: YES Slightly longer answer in this🧵 👉cesifo.org/DocDL/cesifo1_wp9… 1/10
