At @ESAFFUG, we continue to call for a shift away from hazardous agrochemicals in agriculture, which pose serious risks to human health, soil fertility and ecosystems.
During the #NAF2026, this call was reinforced as small-scale farmers were urged to embrace agroecological farming practices and inputs that restore soil health, improve food quality and promote sustainable food production.

Indigenous seeds are built for our soils, our climates and our cultures. Saving, sharing and selling these seeds should never be criminalised. But do the existing and emerging seed laws in East Africa uphold these rights? What does the AU Policy on Farmer-Managed Seed Systems mean for the region?

Women small-scale farmers are at the heart of selecting, preserving, sharing and passing on local seed varieties and the knowledge behind them.
In a compelling article, @ZuwenaKhatib of The Guardian tells a story of women small-scale farmers' experiences with local seeds. A member of the 3rd Cohort of our @Agroecology_Sch, her insights add to the conversations ahead of the 1st Eastern Africa Indigenous Seed Conference, particularly the call to uphold women farmersโ rights to productive resources, including quality seed.

Most national and regional seed policies sideline farmers' seeds in favour of commercial seed interests. Yet, Article 19 of #UNDROP recognises farmersโ rights to save, exchange and sell farm-saved seeds.
Mr. Hakim Baliraine, a small-scale farmer from Mayuge and National Chairperson of @ESAFFUG, questions whether existing policies truly protect small-scale farmers and the seeds they sustain. The upcoming 1st Eastern Africa Indigenous Seed Conference offers an opportunity to shape policy pathways that uphold farmersโ seed rights.
