When Patrick Stewart returned to the role of Karla in Smiley's People, once again he had no dialogue. And yet he successfully imbued Karla with a sense of humanity, as the once fanatical communist has turned his back on ideology for the sake of his daughter.
Exceptional TV drama
Patrick Stewart never said a word as the spymaster Karla but his performance oozed menace, cunning and ideological fanaticism. Wonderful actor. #RIPPatrickStewart
Wonderful. Patrick Stewart later played Ian Richardson's nominal boss as the Soviet spymaster Karla who ran the mole Bill Haydon in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Sejanus - the Roman soldier undone by his own ambition. One of Patrick Stewart's greatest performances in I Claudius.
Sad news about Elke Sommer. Wonderful in A Shot in the Dark, but my favourite film of hers would have to be Lisa and the Devil.
Elke Sommer, the German-born actress who starred in several major 1960s films like “The Prize” with Paul Newman and the “Pink Pnther” sequel “A Shot in the Dark” with Peter Seller, has died. She was 85.
She died just three months after her husband, Wolf Walther, died of cancer.

One Helluva Ride is being hyped as a sexaholics memoir. Fair enough. Sex sells.
If you want to read another passionate life-story pick up a copy of my James Elroy biography Love Me Fierce in Danger. I talked to the women in Ellroy's life, so you hear their side of the story.
I'll be reviewing The Rosenberg File this weekend on Ellroy Reads. I'll also talk about James Ellroy's views on the Rosenberg case: youtube.com/post/UgkxZwdos45…
RIP Peter Medak - a fine filmmaker. His documentary The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a tragic, sometimes hilarious, account of how he kept it together when the film he was directing was falling apart.

The Roger Moore era finally getting the recognition it deserve. Better late than never 🤨
The Radio Times praises the Roger Moore era and suggests that the next Bond could adopt his more lighthearted approach - what do you think?

Before he endorsed 'Green River Rising' Ellroy requested a meeting with the author Tim Willocks. They were two like-minded writers - uncompromising, intense and complicated dedicated to their artistic vision.
