In Dante's Inferno, people who were neutral in life are treated just as harshly as those who sinned.
These are the "uncommitted" who chose no side. They are rejected by both Heaven *and* Hell.
Lukewarm souls are made to wait forever in the "Vestibule of Hell". They're stung by wasps while they run around in pursuit of a meaningless white banner (in punishment for standing beneath no banner in life).
Even worse, their blood and tears flow from their faces onto the ground to be consumed by maggots. Why?
In Christianity, Christ's blood is shed for man's salvation, and the blood of the martyrs is considered the seed of the Church. To bleed — whether literally or metaphorically — for a worthy cause is a great act of love.
But in the case of the lukewarm, their blood merely feeds maggots. "You shall know them by their fruits," Christ says, but the only "fruit" the lukewarm produce is nourishment for worms.
Dante himself was exiled from his hometown of Florence by a rival faction after years of civil conflict. His dislike of the lukewarm stemmed from those who sat on the sidelines and did nothing while his sentence was handed down — those who let injustice slide and were more concerned with protecting their own lot in life.
Dante doesn't even give them the courtesy of mentioning them by name in his Inferno. The "uncommitted" are all nameless.
His warning to the spineless is thus:
Stand for nothing, and nothing is what you'll become.

The Mailbox Test, like the breakfast test, is an excellent way to tell who you can allow to wield power in your society.
Goes like this:
If someone is hurt trying to destroy someone else's stuff in order to take pleasure from their pain, do you sympathize with...
The aggressor because he got hurt?
Or with the guy who owns the stuff, because he wasn't the aggressor?
You can have people in your society who fail the Mailbox Test. That's okay... they can work at hospices, or shelters for orphaned kittens, or something.
But you cannot allow them to vote, or otherwise wield political power. Because if you do, they will open the gates of the city to the enemy.
I am personally tired of everyone pretending that people who enjoy ruining things for random strangers are just kewt smol beans who are only aggressive because of all the complex socioeconomic factors and lack of resources.
They knew someone would be hurt by what they did. They knew that someone had done literally nothing harmful to them. And those two ideas, in combination made them feel pleasure. And they went and did it.
That is the sign of a rotten soul.
Defending ourselves and our property is not just a right, it's a moral obligation. Otherwise, we just kick the can down the road for someone else to deal with, someone who may not be able to defend herself.
I don't care if a vandal breaks his arms trying to destroy my stuff. Because I value my stuff more than a vandal's arms. And the fact that he tried to destroy somebody else's stuff shows that he, too, values his arms less than the opportunity to hurt somebody.
We cannot allow such people inside the city, and we cannot give the keys to those who would open the gates for them.
This post is an excellent litmus test for understanding of just war theory.
Despite the fact that I can see how effective this would be, I must oppose it because the damage it would do to my enemy (who bashes in my mailbox) would far outweigh the good of saving my mailbox. Its disproportionality is opposed by our duty in charity (and even justice) to watch out even for the good of our enemies.
(Yes, by the way, I have had my mailbox bashed in by random vandals.)

Just finished a conversation with the director of a feature I'm producing, and here's a perspective from it that I've shared before. It might be useful for your genre #writing so I'll share it again for those that might have missed my earlier thread. It returns often in my work.

The direct path to become extraordinary & have access to secrets in life is to: First, find something that works (hard). Then, quadruple down on that thing (harder, even more rare).
Unfathomable how no one does this & every impressive person you meet fundamentally does this.

Our obligation in the next fifteen years is to set the West in absolute order, no matter what that requires. We must be so ruthless in this task that our descendants will look back on us and shudder, and we will have earned our reputation as "those evil ancestors."

The two most evil things ever said:
1. "You're evil because you don't like what I want you to like."
2. "You have to make sacrifices for people who don't do anything good for you."
The entire "liberal" (anti-Western, genocidal, authoritarian) regime rests entirely on a foundation of these two popular beliefs.
"Do you not like a certain thing happening in your world? Well then you're evil! You HAVE to like it! You don't have a right to have preferences... but OTHER people do. SPECIAL people!"
"Aw, poor baby. Is a bad thing happening to you? Well you deserve it, because it's for the benefit of others! Which others? Oh yeah, the ones who show hate for you in your own homeland and aren't even supposed to be there. You need to sacrifice for them! So they can hate you more effectively!"
Look out for those messages. Every "liberal" (mass-murdering communist) and most "conservatives" (naive liberals) uses these arguments.
The correct counterargument is: "Why are their needs important, but not mine? If that's your position, we are enemies and not countrymen."
And you don't debate with enemies! Debates only make sense when they are between people who want the best for each other, but disagree on how to make it happen. "You should be harmed for my benefit" isn't a debate, it's just violence.

I remember growing uo hearing about the evils of the Crusades and how damaging they were to the Christian witness. Then we were told of the evils of colonialism and merchantilism, the Renaissance and Medievalism, then the evils of nationalism. It wasn't the norm at that time
