โWhen you work in human rights, you become emotionally invested in the work. You listen to peopleโs painful experiences, witness injustice and carry these stories long after leaving the courtroom. We celebrate victories and landmark judgments, but we rarely talk about what the work costs the lawyers themselves, their families, their relationships and their peace of mind.
We cannot keep celebrating sacrifice without asking what that sacrifice is costing. Lawyers are human beings too. They need space to rest, people they can talk to and institutions that care about the people doing the work, not just the work itself.
We must also prepare the next generation to take over, transfer the knowledge we have accumulated and build institutions that can sustain the work beyond individual leaders. Eventually, we all have to step aside, and the question should not simply be what happens to us, but what happens to the work.
We must continue defending human rights, but we cannot destroy ourselves in the process. The work matters, justice matters and human rights matter, but the people doing the work matter too. Even those who fight for others need care, support and rest.โ

It was such a great honour to be part of this conversation.
โThe true measure of a good lawyer is not only the ability to find answers within the law, but also the wisdom to recognise when the law, on its own, cannot provide a complete answer. It is in this broader understanding of justice and the responsibility we bear towards those we serve that the nobility of the legal profession truly lies.โ

The pursuit of justice also has a human cost. How do legal practitioners protect their wellbeing while advocating for the rights and dignity of others?

Convened by the @ug_lawsociety in partnership with CEHURD, @afyanahakiug , Action for Womenโs Health and the #LIRAProgramme, the training examines the emotional demands of legal practice, particularly for practitioners handling cases involving reproductive injustice, sexual and gender-based violence, discrimination and other traumatic experiences.
Through discussions on reproductive justice, mental wellbeing, trauma-informed lawyering and sustainable legal practice, participants are reflecting on how to pursue justice while protecting their own wellbeing and ensuring that interactions with clients and witnesses uphold dignity, safety and respect.
The discussions recognise that sustainable legal practice requires attention to both the people seeking justice and the practitioners working to secure it.

The just-concluded CLE training highlighted self-care, trauma-informed lawyering, and sustainable legal practice, emphasising the importance of lawyers managing the emotional toll of legal work while caring for their own well-beingand ensuring that clients and witnesses are treated with dignity, safety, and respect.
The key takeaway is that sustaining the pursuit of justice also requires lawyers to recognise and prioritise their own well-being as they continue to advocate for the rights of others.

One Ugandan, paid with money collected from Ugandans in various forms to run this country, and equipped with guns, uniforms and other gear purchased with Ugandansโ money, is using those resources to abduct and torture Ugandans, then gloating about how he will kill more Ugandans, torture them and make them disappear.
Other Ugandans are saying, โLook, this Ugandan is a threat to us as Ugandans. He is destroying a fundamental part of our social contract, in which the people entrust a few individuals with the power to govern the country.โ We must not forget that when this power is abused, Ugandans have the power to take it back. Fundamentally, power belongs to the people.
The question to answer is not whether I used a phone line registered in my motherโs name rather than mine. That is merely a decoy. The real question is whether some Ugandans are considered more Ugandan than others. Are we saying that when some peopleโs opinions do not prevail, they must be abducted, tortured or killed? If anyone agrees with that, I would consider them a cabbage. Only a cabbage could think that way and find pleasure in abducting, torturing and killing fellow Ugandans.
The past fortnight and a few days have been trying, but they have not broken me. Instead, they have strengthened my courage. I have drawn strength from your solidarity and support, which have encouraged me to believe that the future of this country is not as broken as we might imagine. There is still a flicker of hope, and if we find the right way to nurture it, our country will ultimately be set free.
I reiterate, without fear, that Uganda is not a monarchy. The people of Uganda deserve a say in the transition of their country, and fear must never be used as a tool to silence them or shut them up, especially at a time when their voices matter most.
I once again express my gratitude for your support. And I must say that, contrary to what they expected, **I will not go quiet. I will not keep silent. I will not flee into exile out of fear. I will stay until the very end.**
We are going to defend this country, as provided for under Article 3 of our Constitution. When the Constitution is abused and the rule of law gives way to the rule of an individual, we have a constitutional duty to resist and defend our Constitution and our country. In doing so, we shall not be breaking the law; we shall be exercising our constitutional mandate.
The struggle continues, and we shall prevail over fear. The demand remains: Arrest Muhoozi and free all political prisoners
Thank you, comrades. Thank you, fellow Ugandans.

It was established to provide specialized, research based expertise on cross-cutting thematic issues, such as, rights impacts of Artificial Intelligence, climate change, and socio-economic justice. Members are elected on a geographically distributed basis (five seats designated for African States).

PUBLICATION ALERT!๐
This report examines how age of consent laws influence adolescentsโ access to sex, marriage, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services in Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
It explores gaps and inconsistencies between national laws, policies, and guidelines, how overlapping legal frameworks influence access to services, and how colonial legal legacies continue to inform understandings of adolescent sexuality, capacity, and rights.
Drawing on legal pluralism and decolonial theory, the report offers insights to inform more coherent, rights-based legal and policy reforms that reflect adolescentsโ evolving capacities and lived realities.
