Ding ding ... obviously there are going to be ethical limits but building a simulated law firm is going work alot better if you can anchor it to a real empirical distribution (cc @mjbommar )

If Google paid $10M for Spirit’s Airline’s data when they went bankrupt, how much would a frontier/neo lab be willing to pay for Weil’s data?

"But another possibility is that law firms will use AI to increase their operating leverage." Could another possibility be that firms who rely on AI to do much of the work associates typically handled will lose clients because AI is surprisingly wrong on numerous occasions and rainmakers are not used to reviewing minutia to make sure the associates did not hallucinate precedent before presenting it as fact? At least in the short term until AI destroys or enslaves humanity, of course.

MAKE YOUR CUSTOMERS CHECK THE BOX THAT SAYS THAT THEY’VE READ AND ACCEPTED YOUR TERMS
Yet another court confirms that TOS sitting passively at the bottom of a website ("browsewrap") are not enforceable. Here, Brooks Brothers's arbitration clause is useless because the TOS that contain it aren't enforceable.

There's not a single law firm I use that I would stay with if a key lawyer working on my stuff left. I don't think I'm all that unique among my peers. Law firms better figure that out.

I graduated law school in 2012, along with the biggest class in history. If you weren't from a T14 school, there was nothing. None of us could find jobs, even the top students. We had to hang shingles or do something completely different. I have ZERO sympathy for big law firms.

My thoughts on Weil-gate: 1- I have a fair number of former colleagues who decamped to Weil some years ago from Gibson. I have full confidence that the partners will be jusy fine. And I wish the very best for those who are still associates. They were and are great lawyers and I hope they land some place that will offer them long term stability. 2- At the risk of offending some of my former colleagues (but by no means do I intend any offense), my mentor at Gibson and the single best lawyer I've ever worked with, a man who I admire beyond description and to whom I owe much of my career, left Gibson for Weil in the group mentioned above. I have no doubt he will be just fine. But I say this to underscore, it is not the case that Weil was full of anything but really good attorneys. That isnt why it collapsed with such utter and shocking sudden essence. 3 - I count myself in the group of lawyers at my former firm who were admittedly and vocally unhappy with the direction my former firm chose to go in--a model focused on hyper-compensation to a few that undermines law firm culture. When I joined Gibson, no one left for another firm or essentially no one. It had a real identifiable culture. The shift killed thay culture or will kill it eventually. That said, it is hard to cast blame at my firm for doing whay it did. It read the tea leaves correctly and saw that hyper-mobility of top rainmakers was going to happen and if the firm wanted to continue it had to adapt. I don't like it, but that's life. Better to survive and thrive than not to. 4 - I do worry this trend will continue. Why make 15 million if you can make 16? What difference does it make if you are at X,Y,Z firm rather than A, B, C firm when they all have become fungible as firms, there is no real culture left but "the market" etc? It is not good and will continue the Private Equity takeover of law, the de-professionalization of law, the "law is just another business" view of law. Anyway, rant over. You might not have sympathy for people who make hundreds of thousands of dollars losing their jobs overnight because some people are greedy and want a couple million more than they make now. But those people have lives, debts, families, etc and now have to shift on a dime. Not a happy scenario to be in.

They’re a major firm. I’ve heard of Barnes & Thornburg so I would think you would have heard of Weil. The greatest tax lawyer of all time, Martin Ginsburg, was there until moving to DC when his wife Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the DC Circuit.

Tomorrow I'm buying every @redbaronpizza I can find in Central Florida. And every penny of my Pizza Friday money is going to Walter E. Zerod of Michigan. gofundme.com/f/support-a-har… A father in Michigan is stocking frozen pizzas late at night. He has to be up at 5 a.m. to do it all over again. He's struggling to pay his mortgage. He just wants to get home to his kids. He's working his ass off trying to make ends meet. And while he's doing all that, some guy decides to harass him at work. A MICHIGAN MAN. Well, I've seen enough. This dad deserves a break. Let's give him one.
If anyone knows this man or the backstory here, please put him in touch with me. @smblawgroup will do whatever we can to support, including pro bono legal services if needed.

It is completely insane to subject yourself to paying for health insurance when @crowdhealth exists. I pay $725 per month for a family of five. We’ve been members since 2021, have had two babies, multiple health events, and couldn’t be happier. We’re paying less than $10,000 a year and never have a problem. Free yourself from the extortion of health insurance and become a member.

I would be *extremely* nervous this morning if I woke up as an associate at a big prestigious firm with a big salary, lifestyle, and family, but with debt and little visibility into what’s really going on and limited exit options to sustain my lifestyle.

Consider what this means for the future of high-end legal services in the AI-era. Hint: you don’t actually need a highly-leveraged model in order to drive the value that clients are willing to pay a premium for.

This is wild- Weil, Gotshal dissolving with no debt, few liabilities, $2.1 billion in revenue last year…just too many high producers going elsewhere.
Leaders at Weil, Gotshal & Manges said at a firmwide meeting Wednesday afternoon that they plan to dissolve the law firm, according to people familiar with the matter wsj.com/business/weil-gotsha… via @WSJ
