The beauty of the Crowd is that it creates a free market by filling the gap between two broken options:
Health insurance supposedly "protects" people from big bills (although it often doesn't), by transferring the risk to a third party, it removes any reason to care about price, which is a major reason costs keep climbing.
Going uninsured keeps people price conscious, but it leaves them exposed to catastrophic expenses.
CrowdHealth combines the two: community support for large, unexpected costs, with members who keep ownership of their own healthcare decisions and the tools to make those decisions well.
We believe putting ownership back with the individual is the only way to bring real consumerism, and real cost reduction, to healthcare.
Sorry we were unable to Livestream. Apparently there was an X wide issue that kept us from doing so. We'll try it again in November.

It's that time. TAKEDOWN TUESDAY!
We have some DOOZIES coming up! This is the first in a string of 6 digit bills where cash pay discounts and our negotiating ninjas have gotten them to a reasonable price.
Major heart surgery, ICU stay, meds, and implanted defibrillator.
Member paid $500
The Crowd picked up the remaining $59,500.
Escape the system. Join CrowdHealth.

There's a better way to protect your health than paying for health insurance.

My guest Andy Schoonover, founder of CrowdHealth (@crowdhealth), quit insurance after his plan refused to pay for his daughter's $8,000 ear procedure and built a parallel system.
Paying cash shocked him. The same stress echo test that cost another man's insurance plan $5,000 cost him $225, and his pediatrician knocked 40 or 50 percent off the bill once insurance left the room.
Andy explains how nearly 20 percent of claims get denied by design, why doctors see only eight cents of every healthcare dollar, and how 35,000 people are funding each other's medical bills through CrowdHealth.
He also shares why he's willing to go to war with the system, even after death threats and regulatory fights.
If you've ever opened an insurance bill and felt your stomach drop, this one is for you.

Our mission is to “Legit love our members”
Compare our customer reviews to any health insurance company or Healthshare and we will win.
Why do we focus so much on customer satisfaction?
40-50% of our customers come from existing customers.
If we treat our members well they’ll tell their family and friends. The member gets $250 and their referral gets a discount.
The Crowd grows and your prices drop.
Total economic alignment between company and customer.
Also, if you’ve have ever met our people face to face, you know it goes beyond the economics. You can’t fake it. We have an incredible group of people who truly care about you and your families.
If you want to save a bunch of money, and have a better healthcare experience, go to independent doctors (= not affiliated with a health system).
They are so good they don't need the hospital sales funnel to fill their calendars.
They don't have the expensive bureaucracy of a health system so they can charge you less.
We need to support them. They are becoming harder to find due to hospital system consolidation but if you are a Crowd member we'll help. Reach out to your Care Advocate.

I wish I could say we planned it this way. The truth is we became a data company:
More members → more bills
More bills → more cash-pay prices
More cash-pay prices → better low-cost, high-quality options
Better options → lower costs
Lower costs → lower prices
Lower prices → more members
…and the flywheel spins again.

Been on this 3 years, family of 6, best healthcare I’ve ever had. @crowdhealth @CrowdCEO
I called to cancel my health insurance because I couldn't afford the premium anymore.
The rep asked why I wanted to cancel.
I told her I'm paying $685 a month for a family plan with a $9,000 deductible.
That's $8,220 a year before I've even paid for a single doctor's visit, prescription, or emergency room bill.
So if someone in my family gets seriously sick, I'm still looking at thousands of dollars in medical expenses on top of the premiums I've already been paying all year.
I asked her what exactly I'm supposed to do with a plan like that.
She explained that the policy was designed to help cover eligible medical expenses after I met my deductible.
I told her I understood how insurance works. What I don't understand is how a family can pay more than $8,000 a year for coverage and still be terrified of getting sick.
She didn't have an answer.
WE'VE CREATED A HEALTHCARE SYSTEM WHERE PEOPLE ARE PAYING THOUSANDS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM MEDICAL BILLS THEY STILL CAN'T AFFORD.
"CrowdHealth is the most effective thing I've seen to lower healthcare costs in the last three decades."

For those of you who signed up recently, welcome to the Crowd!
Just curious, how long did the sign up process take?
Its our favorite time of the week:
TAKEDOWN TUESDAY!
Member paid $500
The community picked up $14,500
The medical industrial complex seems to think that: "But it's not insurance!" Is a dig.
It’s actually the greatest compliment… because that’s the whole point. 😂

Small correction that matters: a qualifying life event like marriage, a new baby, or losing other coverage lets you change your election mid-year. And before swapping a plan for a crowdfunding membership, know it isn't insurance. Nobody is obligated to pay the big bill.
Before you opt into your employers health insurance, know two things:
1) Once you opt in, you can't get out until next years open enrollment.
2) Depending upon how much your employer eats the cost of your insurance, you could save some money with CrowdHealth. You can check and see here:
