Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) says he will not reintroduce articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth if Hegseth resigns.
In September, Massie introduced eight articles accusing Hegseth of waging the war on Iran without congressional approval, violating the War Powers Resolution and laws meant to limit civilian casualties, and ordering extrajudicial killings in counternarcotics strikes.
The House recessed early in September before a vote. Massie, who lost his primary and leaves Congress in January, has said he will bring the articles back when the House reconvenes in a 'lame duck' session on November 9th.
Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) told CNN he plans to trigger a House vote to impeach Secretary of War Pete Hegseth when Congress returns next week, and multiple GOP sources said they expect it to pass.
Massie introduced the resolution September 15th as a privileged measure, but House leaders sent members home early before a vote could happen. The House is scheduled to return November 9th.
Republican lawmakers and allies are also moving to blame Hegseth for the party’s midterm losses, CNN reports, citing multiple Republicans who spoke anonymously. They argue he oversold the ability to win the Iran war quickly and kept advocating escalation despite little sign Iran is closer to surrender.
President Donald J. Trump said Wednesday he thinks Secretary Hegseth is “doing a very good job” and denied plans to fire him. Of the war he said, “If I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again.” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth “will not back down” and is “100% committed to leading the Department until the end of President Trump’s term.”

END OF THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE? DEMS COULD ACT AFTER STATE LEGISLATIVE GAINS
Democrats’ new trifectas in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada could let them push the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact past the 270-electoral-vote threshold needed to take effect.
The compact currently covers 222 electoral votes. Adding the five states’ 61 votes would bring it to 283. Once active, participating states would award their electors to the national popular-vote winner rather than the candidate who won their state.
