A great host, but I’m not sure everyone knows what an amazing person Ernie Johnson is. Ernie and his wife Cheryl adopted 4 children, including his son Michael who had an incurable disease, Duchenne Muscular dystrophy. They brought Michael home from Romania after being told nobody wanted him. The Johnsons gave Michael the best life, he sadly passed in 2021. Ernie has also fought cancer twice and championed many great causes. Truly the goat.
It’s time. 🤟🤟🏾🤟🏻🤟🏽

The Canadian government's mass immigration policies of the last 10 years were highly regressive. Having seemingly learned nothing, they are dead set on turning back on the taps rather than letting the country heal. On cue, the media has begun parroting the government's narrative and gaslighting anyone who disagrees. This suggests that they remain blissfully unaware that the Bank of Canada has written extensively about how (mass) immigration has negatively affected housing, rents, inflation, labour supply, wages, and productivity. So I've compiled an inexhaustive list to help these folks. 🏘️- Monetary Policy Report, October 2023 🔗bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/u… ▶️"The strength in rent and other housing costs is partly due to strong housing demand, which is supported by rapid population growth, and a structural lack of housing supply" 🏘️- Staff Analytical Note, December 2023 🔗bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/u… ▶️"The rise in immigration is nonetheless contributing to pressures in inflation components linked to house prices, given that it is adding more to housing demand than to housing supply in the context of structural imbalances in the Canadian housing market." 🏘️ - Speech by Toni Gravelle, December 2023 🔗bankofcanada.ca/2023/12/econ… ▶️"When a country’s population is growing quickly, the supply of housing also needs to increase to avoid a worsening in affordability. Shortly after immigration began ramping up in 2015, Canada’s vacancy rate—a measure of how many apartments and houses there are available to rent or buy—started to fall." 🏘️ - Monetary Policy Report, January 2024 🔗bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/u… ▶️"A larger increase in newcomers than in the past is adding pressure to the structural supply constraint in housing. This has helped to push the overall housing vacancy rate to record lows, which has underpinned house prices and led to higher rents (Chart 3-A)." 🏘️ - Staff Analytical Note, April 2024 🔗 bankofcanada.ca/2024/04/staf… ▶️"Meanwhile, the composition of immigrants coming to Canada has changed considerably since 2015. Historically, growth of the immigrant population in Canada came mostly from permanent residents....While the wages of the earlier immigrants are closer to those of Canadian-born workers and have been increasing over time, those of non-permanent residents are much lower and have fallen over this period. Because real hourly wages are typically correlated with labour productivity, this piece of evidence is consistent with non-permanent residents working in less productive occupations." 🏘️ - Monetary Policy Report, July 2024 🔗bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/u… ▶️"The increase in housing demand from newcomers is being felt across all types of housing, but the largest initial impact tends to be in rental markets. This is because most newcomers start out as renters." 👨‍🌾 - Staff Analytical Note, May 2025 🔗bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/u… ▶️"if newcomers’ conditional wages reflect their labour productivity, the productive capacity of the Canadian economy grew less than it would have if recent newcomers had the same socio-economic characteristics as in the past." ▶️"However, this gain has been particularly acute for certain industries such as accommodation and food services, business, building and other support services, and retail trade. Labour productivity in these industries—which are comprised of a sizable share of lower-skilled occupations—is lower than the average in the business sector." 👨‍🌾 - Staff Analytical Note, May 2025 🔗bankofcanada.ca/2025/06/staf… ▶️"Youth—individuals 15–24 years of age—represent a significant portion of the overall increase in unemployment since the start of 2023. This is a larger share than during other periods of rising unemployment (Chart 5). This is partly due to the high number of immigrants, who are generally younger than the rest of the population." 👨‍🌾 - Speech by Nicolas Vincent, May 2026 🔗bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/u… ▶️“The labour market is particularly challenging for young people”: The 2022–24 influx of young newcomers “intensified competition in Canada for lower-skill and entry-level jobs”. Youth unemployment has risen above 14%, and he expects it may normalize now that immigration has been cut. 🏘️ - Staff Article, September 2026 🔗bankofcanada.ca/2026/09/spar… ▶️"Strong population growth drove asking rents higher in recent years"

My life was completely changed by 9/11. Not right away. On that bright, blue Tuesday morning, I was moving into a new apartment in Hudson Heights, way up near the George Washington Bridge in northern Manhattan, far, far away from Ground Zero. My TV wasn't yet working, and social media didn't exist yet, so I didn't even see the footage until that evening, sitting in a neighborhood restaurant, watching the towers fall over and over. I didn't know anyone who died. But two and a half years later, freshly divorced and starting to date again, I met a sweet man at a mutual friend's birthday party. When he emailed me to ask me out, I accepted and swiftly asked my mutual friend what he was like and if there was anything I should know. “Oh, he’s so nice,” she began, “but there is one thing you should probably know.” She paused before continuing: “His fiancee died on 9/11. That’s how I know him. Through her.” My heart sank. Newly-divorced woman and 9/11 widower? The odds of romantic success, unfortunately, seemed low. Our chances seemed even less promising during our first date walking through Central Park, when he told me he had met his fiancee on September 11, 1999. He had made an anniversary dinner reservation at their favorite restaurant, only to fall to his knees in his office after hearing the news. I could barely hold it together while we walked silently past Strawberry Fields. I bent down to pet a passing beagle puppy. “Amy loved dogs,” he said sadly, jamming his hands in his pockets. Here I was, listening to a grieving man talk about a woman whose last terrifying moments were spent at Windows on the World on the top floor of the North Tower. A professional event planner, Amy had arrived early that morning to set up for a company breakfast. After a few dates, he invited me over to his apartment for dinner. As I sad on the living room couch, he knelt down and put a small, yet incredibly heavy, slab of rock in my hand. “They gave all the victim’s families a piece,” he said matter-of-factly. It was an actual piece of the Twin Towers, inscribed with the never-to-be-forgotten date. For a long time I was overwhelmed by Amy's presence in our relationship, and by the constant images and memories of September 11 that seemed to hang relentlessly like rain clouds over the entire city, even though several years had passed. I felt even more overwhelmed a couple of years later when he took me to the Family Room at One Liberty Plaza. It was on the 20th floor, directly overlooking the World Trade Center site. It was established it in 2002 as a private place specifically for families of people killed on 9/11. It was not open to the public or the press. It was filled to the brim with photographs, missing-person posters, handwritten notes, poems, cards, artwork, flowers, and stuffed animals. It was suffocating. 25 years later, 9/11 rarely comes up much anymore between us. My husband and I have been happily married now for 18 years, and September 11 is also connected to something beautiful - my niece was born on that day in 2008. But it will always remain hard to wrap my mind around the fact that the end for Amy Hope Lamonsoff who was only 29 in 2001, was a new beginning for me. I hope you Google her. She is certainly always remembered by those who knew and loved her.

Remember when we used to complain about World Series games that started at 9pm? Waking up to find out that one of the best matches in American male tennis in the last 20 years ended at 3:33 am…and that the match was in the US is beyond inexcusable for this sport.

It is absurd that I am finishing my reports on yesterday's U.S. Open action at 6:40 a.m, which is only three hours after it finished, and less than five hours until the next day's play starts. The matches were great; the tournament needs an overdue fix. benrothenberg.com/p/us-open-…
