We believe people should be free to think, to question, and to be who they are. Sometimes, that belief comes at a price. We support those who pay it.

We fact-checked it, and it is basically true. Superior intelligence does not necessarily come with moral integrity.
Putin praised Elon Musk and called him one of his "American" partners, this come after weeks of Musk antagonizing Ukraine and throttling their air defence. "Elon Musk is genius, a real genius." "We are in close contact with our American partners, including Mr. Musk."

This is what we call living in reality.
When my husband died, because he was so famous and known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me-it still sometimes happens-and ask me if Carl changed at the end and converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again. Carl faced his death with unflagging courage and never sought refuge in illusions. The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again. I don't ever expect to be reunited with Carl. But, the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief and precious life is. We never trivialized the meaning of death by pretending it was anything other than a final parting. Every single moment that we were alive and we were together was miraculous, not miraculous in the sense of inexplicable or supernatural. We knew we were beneficiaries of chance. . . . That pure chance could be so generous and so kind. . . . That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. . . . That we could be together for twenty years. That is something which sustains me and it’s much more meaningful. . . . The way he treated me and the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other and our family, while he lived. That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday. I don't think I'll ever see Carl again. But I saw him. We saw each other. We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful. - Ann Druyan

😄 A blow from an unexpected quarter! Mozambique's president has made Putin a laughingstock The African leader posted a photo on social media from the so-called Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF). As we all know, the Russian dictator is self-conscious about his height, and photos like this are a rare sight in his official photo collection. Wonder if the photographer is still alive?

Cool.
Just another reason to love Celine Dion 🫶 The singer has long been an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and even shared a love letter to queer people everywhere in 2017. “I’m honored to be able to offer words of enthusiasm, encouragement, and strength, in support of Pride and all of my friends in the LGBTQ community,” she wrote for Billboard to celebrate Pride. “I’ve always said that music is a language that has no barriers, and it’s also true that love is an emotion that has no barriers.” She continued: “I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by so many beautiful people from the LGBTQ community throughout my entire career,” giving a shoutout to her colleagues and fans alike. “All of you have made such a positive impact on my life, and I hope and pray that our world will continue to better understand that acceptance and tolerance are virtues that we can never have enough of. For now, I join each and every one of you in this year’s celebration of Pride, sending you all my love and wishing you peace and happiness today, tomorrow… and well beyond.” 📷 Getty

Apparently, the road to superintelligence runs through the branding department. Why wait for a scientific breakthrough when you can simply ban the old name? Next: rename inflation “Super Prosperity” and declare the economy fixed.
I have no idea why renaming AI is so bizarrely important to Trump. Nobody cares about the name he chose. Nobody is using it or will use it. And it’s not even technically accurate because “super intelligence” already had an agreed upon, widely adopted definition. This is the weirdest political hill to die on. It gains you nothing. Not a single ordinary American in the country, anywhere, cares deeply about making sure people say “SI” instead of “AI.” We are days away from a major election and this bullshit is the focus? Just baffling.

RFK Jr. claims Arabs don’t produce science, win major scientific prizes or produce literature. That is demonstrably false. You can criticize religious dogmatism without inventing facts about half a billion people. Here are the facts: • Ahmed Zewail: Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1999. • Moungi Bawendi, of Tunisian and French parentage: shared the Chemistry Nobel, 2023. • Omar Yaghi, born to a Palestinian family: shared the Chemistry Nobel, 2025—and won the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 2018. • Naguib Mahfouz: Nobel Prize in Literature, 1988. • Michael Atiyah, a British mathematician with a Lebanese father: Fields Medal, 1966. And science does not begin or end with prestigious prizes. UNESCO recorded 95,817 scientific publications from Arab states in 2019, up 64% from 2015. Publications per million inhabitants that year: Qatar 1,320; Tunisia 610; Egypt 231; the G20 benchmark was 420. Those figures measure output associated with countries, including international collaboration—not the ethnicity or religion of every researcher. Publication volume is not the same as quality, either. But “they don’t produce science” is an extraordinary claim to make about a region producing tens of thousands of scientific papers. There is a serious secular criticism to make here. Religious authority should have no veto over scientific inquiry. Researchers and writers must be free to challenge sacred claims, reject religious doctrines and publish uncomfortable conclusions without censorship or threats. The historical record makes sweeping dismissals even more absurd. Consider algebra. Its name comes from “al-jabr” in the title of al-Khwarizmi’s influential Arabic mathematical treatise. He helped systematize methods for solving equations, and his name also gave us the word “algorithm.” He was a scholar of Persian origin working in Baghdad—not an ethnic Arab—which is precisely why the history should be described accurately as a contribution of the wider Arabic-language scientific world. Then consider Arab scholars themselves: • Ibn al-Haytham transformed optics through mathematical analysis and experiments. His Book of Optics explained vision through light entering the eye and influenced generations of later researchers. • Ibn al-Nafis described the passage of blood through the lungs in the 13th century, rejecting Galen’s supposed pores between the heart’s ventricles—centuries before European accounts of pulmonary circulation. • Al-Zahrawi’s surgical treatise documented procedures and illustrated instruments, becoming an influential reference in European medicine after its translation into Latin. These scholars did more than preserve earlier knowledge. They questioned it, corrected it and extended it. Their achievements belong to a history of exchange across languages, cultures and generations. Kennedy himself acknowledged a medieval golden age. But acknowledging historical achievements does not excuse erasing modern ones. Neither the Nobel record nor the publication figures disappear because they complicate a political speech. The case for secularism is that ideas must survive scrutiny rather than demand immunity from it. That standard applies to our own claims, too. Defend free inquiry. Challenge religious coercion. Investigate institutional failures. But if your argument collapses when someone opens the Nobel Prize website, the problem is your argument.

Apparently, Ana Kasparian is an “antisemite” because she refuses to accept that tens of thousands of children are legitimate military targets. What a terrible failure on her part—to insist that Palestinian children are human beings.
The fact that our resources are spent helping Israel do this is far more offensive than calling it out in a political ad.

The comedian who became a politician: Bill Maher and the limits of mainstream satire
The question is no longer whether Maher is a comedian who talks about politics. It is whether he has become a politician who occasionally tells jokes. He wants the credibility of an outsider and the privileges of an insider. He mocks politicians, then treats dinner with the president as evidence of his own importance. He champions independent thought, yet his defense of Israel often sounds more like political advocacy than skeptical scrutiny. Having no party membership does not make someone impartial. Offending both sides does not prove intellectual independence. And access to powerful people is hardly proof of a willingness to challenge them. Maher can choose his political positions. But those positions deserve the same scrutiny he applies to everyone else. “I’m just a comedian” cannot be a permanent exemption. janbryxi.com/2026/10/27/bill…
