WATCH NOW: A brand new animated video from Freedom Foundation that exposes the maze of confusing opt-out windows and ignored communications many public employees have to go through.
"Public employees deserve a real choice."
“I was working for nothing.”
That’s how California IHSS caregiver Roxanna Castro describes her paycheck after SEIU Local 2015 took nearly 40% of her $116 check (more than her entire gas bill) while she cared for patients with schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis.
When she tried to opt out, the union told her it was there if she needed help. When she actually called, no one answered.
Castro is one of more than three dozen providers on whose behalf the Freedom Foundation has filed unfair labor practice charges against SEIU Locals 2015 and 721 and UDW/AFSCME, challenging practices that keep caregivers paying dues they don’t want.
As a Hispanic woman who came to this country to work hard, she says the union is simply “ripping us off.”
Too many California homecare providers remain locked into these arrangements. Check out Roxanna's full story here:

This is a slap in the face to every public worker paying dues.
When school districts across the nation can’t get even half their students reading at grade level, why are union execs taking a vanity trip to Hungary to discuss organizing and "international solidarity"?
Unions run on the same conceit. They tell workers they’ll make better choices for them and their families than they could make for themselves.
That reveals a remarkably low view of workers. The message is essentially, “You can’t figure this out, so let us decide for you.”
Are California unions legally untouchable? Or does it just seem that way?
Either way, Freedom Foundation is not backing down. 🧵
The union misconduct we are referring to includes forging union membership cards, deducting union dues from employees’ wages without any form of consent, ignoring opt-out requests, tricking employees into signing up for union membership, and using confusing language and fine print to obscure the fact that union membership often comes with a years-long commitment.
These organizations that victimize workers don’t deserve the state’s protection, so while the unions evade accountability through some backdoor legal tactics, Freedom Foundation attorneys are just as nimble. Our team recently pivoted to file unfair labor practice charges with the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB).
Until the appeals are resolved, state employees whose dues are deducted from paychecks without permission have nowhere to turn to seek accountability—so we are doing it for them.
From start to finish, California’s public-sector labor relations system appears designed to protect unions’ bottom lines, not the workers those unions are supposed to represent.

Roxanna Castro, a California IHSS home care provider, describes how SEIU 2015 took nearly half her small paycheck in dues while providing little support when she needed it.
With help from the Freedom Foundation, she and more than three dozen other providers are filing complaints against the union for making it nearly impossible to opt out.
The fight over collective bargaining in Douglas County is about more than just a local contract for Colorado teachers.
The district’s teachers’ union is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, a national organization with political interests of its own. And more than 40% of each dollar in teacher dues goes to state and national affiliates.
The union is fighting for money, not the teachers. Read the full op-ed now.
"Voters are being asked to fund a system before anyone can tell them who will help run it."
In a new Denver Gazette op-ed, Freedom Foundation Director of Employer Engagement Cortney Salt explains why Douglas County voters deserve answers before they vote on a school bond, including whether the school board will hand teacher contracts to an AFT-affiliated union.

The Chicago Teachers Union takes $40 MILLION a year from teachers who pay $1,500 each and spends almost none of it on representing them. These unions exist to fund politics and perks for the bosses, not the people who actually teach.
JUST REPORTED: "Nearly 1 in 5 U. California freshmen are failing introductory math.”
Students are graduating high school unable to do basic math—this is no joke. In the 2025-2026 school year, nearly 18% of freshmen in introductory math “either withdrew or received a D or F grade,” reported by @CollegeFix last week.
How is this happening? With a system that keeps lowering expectations (for teachers and students alike), policies that fail to prepare students, and teachers’ unions that prioritize political power and dues revenue over student achievement and the support teachers actually need.
The Chicago Teachers Union rakes in $40 million a year in teacher dues, yet spends less than 20% of that on actual representation, according to a new Illinois Policy Institute report.
Instead, the bulk goes to politics and perks like nearly $10,000 on headshots.
These unions do not represent the teachers who pay $1,500 a year. They represent themselves. Teachers who are furious should go to OptOutToday.com and opt out.

The Buckley Institute (@BuckleyInst) has released its 2026 national undergraduate survey, and the results are a doozy. Let’s unpack the findings, and what they mean for America, fighting radical ideology, and defunding radical unions. ⬇️
Socialism is leading among college students, intense political division is common and even supported, and a significant amount of students support using violence to stop hate speech.
This ideology did not develop overnight. These are the metastasized values introduced to students when they were young. It began years ago, with the early values that slipped into the classroom through radical teachers’ unions.
-Early visible disapproval of politics by teachers became avoiding a class with a professor who holds opinions they disagree with, and being unwilling to have close friends across the political aisle.
-Early hatred of the economy and complaining to students became believing socialist systems are better than capitalist ones, and that 9/11 was deserved.
-Early misunderstanding of free speech became failing to understand the line between violent threats, hate speech, and protected speech, and believing violence is justified to stop what someone believes is hate speech.
What does this mean for fighting radical ideology? It means that this work is more important than ever and that the left has been playing a very long game. Students have been misinformed and led astray by outside influences in the classroom for decades.
Socialism now leads capitalism among college students by the widest margin on record, and nearly half say violence can be justified to stop speech they consider hateful. This is a coordinated effort by anti-America, anti-capitalist organizations who want power centered in the ruling class—not with workers where it belongs.
Freedom Foundation exists to fight this false rhetoric, to expose the vitriol and deception that is at the root of these beliefs, and to empower public workers to see what is really going on so they can speak truth and facts into the leftist muck and mire at every level.
Defunding radical unions and empowering good educators is the most important mission in our nation today.
