I am reposting here to get a more science journalist audience and broader tech journalist on the interesting Phage CRISPR discovery by @AnthropicAI (this is also on my linkedin, but frustratingly social media has been balkanised...)
A prescription shouldn’t be a guessing game.

We have identified what we believe to be a critical issue in the way that computational methods for structural annotation of small molecule MS/MS spectra have historically been evaluated. Fortunately, there is a solution: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Our new study is just out in Science — threads coming soon from several on us on what the results mean (and what they don’t mean!). Huge congrats to co-first authors @tabuckley_ and @PeterBrodeurMD and fun as always working with my partner-in-crime @AdamRodmanMD
A cutting-edge large language model outperformed human doctors in common clinical reasoning tasks including emergency room decisions, identifying likely diagnoses, and choosing next steps in management, according to a new Science study that used real emergency department data.
The authors of the study are clear that their results do not mean AI systems are ready to practice medicine on their own, or that doctors can be removed from the diagnostic process.
The results do, however, raise urgent questions about the future evaluation and implementation of AI tools in clinical care.

A promising step toward more accessible metabolic monitoring 🧪🌍
A recent study describes a rapid, low-cost colorimetric multimetabolite assay for the quantitative measurement of urinary keto acids associated with phenylketonuria (PKU) and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Unlike many current approaches that are either qualitative or require specialized laboratory equipment, this method was designed to support simple, at-home monitoring with quantitative readouts in just minutes.
This kind of innovation has the potential to make a meaningful difference for individuals and families managing inborn errors of metabolism, particularly in settings where access to advanced metabolic clinics is limited. Expanding reliable, user-friendly tools for screening, detection, and dietary monitoring is an important step toward more equitable and proactive metabolic care.

The next frontier: advancing #exposomics to understanding biology of disease. Causal attribution: where the heck do the exposures came from and how do they change from birth to death? But, not least, understanding how they matter to the health of the individual with the tools of AI and continuous monitoring. 🚀
