Nobody is suggesting that, Lauren, least of all @ProfHall1955. The point is that the focus should be on identifying and creating real resources in the economy like skilled workers, infrastructure, machinery, energy etc.
A country with its own sovereign currency cannot run out of money, but real resources are limited. That's where the focus should be. So long as govt spending doesn't outstrip the availability of real resources, no inflationary pressure is created.
Given the catastrophic impact of globalisation on working class communities, the focus needs to shift towards making the UK as self sufficient as possible starting with food security. As John Maynard Keynes recognised more than 80 years ago, anything we can actually do we can afford.
The myth that taxes pay for govt expenditure helps the neoliberal establishment to fool the public into believing that we can't afford a good society, when the very opposite is the case. This is something the left needs to learn. Far too many on the left continue to shoot themselves in the foot by helping to perpetuate this myth.
The left, including the @WorkersPartyGBshould should be challenging this bs because it's a very powerful way to explain how the WPB's excellent ten point programme could be delivered, which is completely absent at the moment, particularly since Steve Hall and I are no longer members.

🟢EXC: Former Labour Mayor Jamie Driscoll will release a 200 page report tomorrow aimed at boosting the Greens' credibility on the economy after joining Zack Polanski’s party last year.
The report, called Hostage Nation, will argue the UK has become hostage to the idea we can't afford the things that will make ordinary life cheaper.
It will say the UK has outsourced financial security to the global markets for the past 40 years and suggest a range of ways that UK financial markets could be used to rebuild Britain, including scrapping self-imposed fiscal rules.
While wanting to show there are figures within the Greens thinking seriously about public finances, it is hoped the document will also catch the attention of Andy Burnham ahead of the budget. The pair were previously close colleagues when working as Metro Mayors together.
Speaking ahead of the report launch Driscoll told me: "A lot of people very much like the values of the Green Party... but before they are going to vote for Greens they want to see, how would they run the economy?
"I' ve looked under the bonnet of the economy, the money is there, the powers are there, but the political bravery is missing."
Full details will be released tomorrow. While this isn't official party policy it has been presented to the Greens' economic working group with the hope it could be adopted by next year.
It comes amid efforts within the party to break with the current fiscal regime and offer a credible economic alternative to attract the left wing vote. As @EthanCroft98 reported last week, that includes a motion to be voted on at conference which would drop the use of interest rates as the main means of controlling inflation.

Nobody is suggesting 'printing more money'. Its a stupid straw man. The deficit is simply the government's net contribution to the money supply, the bulk of which is issued as bank credit. The money supply enables effective demand, which must be balanced by supply. Too much demand enables but does not cause inflation, which devalues the currency, but the positive cause of inflation is rising prices. Currency depreciation can be caused by sell-offs on the FX markets. Government spending is not a direct cause of any of this. Private equity is not interested in the UK beyond asset-stripping. Judicious public investments in energy, utilities, infrastructure, manufacturing and services can increase effective demand and supply, reducing inflation at the same time as driving growth. This is how China has maintained about 5% growth alongside less than 1% inflation. We are in a different situation, vulnerable because of import dependency. Levering ourselves out of global money-market discipline and rebooting our economy will be very difficult. But it must be done, otherwise our decline will be irreversible. There are ways to do it - they require detailed knowledge of finance and monetary operations.
Imagine how much UBI could save in admin... And with AI coming, an' all.

I’ve been researching Danny Tommo. He’s essentially a far right Frank Spencer.

Artificial intelligence could lead to “cracks in the very foundations” of Britain’s economy by costing jobs and overwhelming the welfare system, a former minister has warned
Darren Jones, who served as chief secretary to Sir Keir Starmer, said that there may not be “enough jobs to go round” if the government failed to “get ahead of the curve” on AI
He argued that while AI could improve productivity and result in higher wages or a four-day week, it could also drive unemployment by replacing jobs
Writing in The Times, he said that this could ultimately lead to fewer people in work, a bigger welfare state and lower tax revenues to fund public spending
Jones argued that the government must ask the “bigger questions”, saying: “If the pace of AI development is maintained, and businesses integrate it effectively, we could see cracks in the very foundations of the UK economy.
“If, for example, there is a significant drop in demand for human workers and we have fewer people in work paying tax, how will we respond? The welfare system will not be able to support middle-class workers with good salaries and expensive mortgages if they find themselves out of work. So, what is the answer? What is our offer to young people if there simply are not enough jobs to go round?
'This potential drop in the tax take, and potential increase in economic inactivity and the welfare budget, would clearly be a disaster given the fiscal tightrope the government is having to walk. So, is the social contract fit for the future? If not, what should it look like? What should the Office for Budget Responsibility say about this in its ten-year economic forecast?'
