So I just finished a book. The goal is to try to understand how foreign aid affects elections and democratic accountability -- something I've been thinking about for a long time now. The book is free to read at cup.org/3U9VVxO. (1/n)
Dependency Politics by Ryan Jablonski
Examines how democracy works in aid-dependent countries, challenging conventional wisdom on how aid affects elections and public policy.

Carlos Oya has just published a fantastic book arguing that Chinaโs rise in Africa presents real industrialization opportunities for the continent.
He highlights two channels through which China contributes to industrialization in Africa: (a) infrastructure finance and construction, and (b) direct investment in manufacturing.
However, Oya emphasises that outcomes are uneven and highly dependent on national policy and agency. African governments, firms, and workers negotiate, contest, and shape these outcomes. In particular, the stateโs ability to discipline capital and proactively steer industrial policy is crucial.

Great listen, this @danbanik podcast.
Very relevant for EU, given the needs to listen better to Global South: @afrobarometer is an essential channel for doing so.
Its CEO @joeasunka points out that #Jobs & Employment is the predominant concern of Africa's citizens.
What do Africans really think about democracy, governance, and opportunity?
Our CEO Joseph Asunka (@joeasunka) joins Dan Banik (@danbanik) for a conversation on the, โIn Pursuit of Development podcastโ. Drawing on insights from Afrobarometerโs flagship report on citizen engagement, they unpack youth frustration and activism and why reliable citizen data is vital for shaping Africaโs democratic future.
