Religious freedom is one of America’s most fundamental rights, and one we must defend around the world.
On International Religious Freedom Day, we stand with those facing persecution in China, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, and elsewhere. America must continue to advocate for every person’s right to freely practice their faith.

Very moved today in @UKParliament to be presented with an award, from "The Underground Church in China, In the Spirit of Cardinal Kung and Cardinal Zen", as a "Voice of Solidarity".
Significantly, it is dated June 4 - the anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre.
My first visit to Hong Kong in 1980, as a young MP @HouseofCommons and later I visited Shanghai, where I secretly met persecuted Christians whose bishop, Cardinal Ignatius Kung, had languished for more than 30 years in Chinese jails.
In more recent years, @UKHouseofLords I have had the huge privilege of meeting China’s courageous Cardinal Joseph Zen @CardJosephZen .
The extraordinary courage, the faith of China's persecuted Christians - and the refusal of Tibetan Buddhists, Uyghur Muslims and Falun Gong practitioners - to be crushed by the CCP is deeply inspiring. In whatever ways we can all of us must use every opportunity to be Voices of Solidarity.
Someone who has always been a Voice of Solidarity for the persecuted people of China is @benedictrogers, Senior Director of @fortifyrights and founder and Chair of @hongkongwatch, and I am grateful to him for bringing this beautiful glass plaque and book safely to me at Westminster today.
The stories of those who suffer so grievously for their beliefs should inspire us all - especially those who live in free societies- to be a Voice of Solidarity.

The CPP’s persecution of Chinese people with religious beliefs has led to horrific suffering - underlined today by the death and story of a Trappist monk Benedict Chao – and vividly illustrated in the life of an Irish cousin of my mother who in the 1920s and 1930s worked in China for 20 years. He was hunted down by the Chinese Communist Party’s Red Army. He survived but others from his community were murdered.
Today, Christians in China continue to be persecuted.

In China, persecution continues – but too many look away or collaborate.
What is happening now is simply an extension of the terror unleased by Mao and the CCP, continued through the Cultural Revolution, and to this day.
Benedict Chao’s Obituary, published today (August 18th) by The Daily Telegraph, vividly describes the ordeal of Cistercian monks who saw members of their community murdered and tortured.
Note how the CCP burned down their monastery in Hebei, tied their wrists with chains or wire, and put them on a forced march of 100 miles. Of the community of 75 monks, 33 died of malnutrition or exhaustion.
Benedict Chao’s own story led to escape, exile, and then the re-establishment of a community in what was free Hong Kong.
Underlining the nature of historic CCP persecution, are the accounts from the 1920s and 1930s of my mother’s cousin, Fr.Patrick Malone, who was born and is buried in the tiny Mayo village of Aughagower, at the foot of Croagh Patrick.
He spent twenty years as a Maryknoll priest – later becoming known for his poetry, prolific writing, photography and amateur film making.
What I still find deeply inspiring is his endurance in the face of being hunted down by the CCP’s Red Army, seeing parishioners and colleagues murdered, and insisting that every person has the right to believe or not to believe – and not to be terrorised by a totalitarian regime for doing so.
When I was growing up, my late mother spoke warmly about the work and bravery of her relative. She was right to do so and it is wonderful that another of his relatives, Noreen Malone Tunney, has recorded his life and times in her book “Friends You Used To Know.”
When you consider the suffering which people of religious belief have experienced in China, it vividly illustrates why the Vatican is wrong to have made a secret Pact with the CCP cruxnow.com/vatican/2026/08/…
and why it should reassert what Pope Leo has described as “the supreme value of human rights….universal and inalienable” .
Article 18 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights insist that every human being has the right to believe, not to believe, or to change their belief.
St.John Paul II said that the Declaration was “a milestone on the long and difficult path of the human race… an expression of intrinsic human dignity, which the international community is called upon to protect and promote.”
Article 18 is violated by the CCP every day of every year.
The Vatican should not be signing up to secret pacts, discredited Concordats, and offering only silence in the face of grave suffering, even genocide. It should once again be the world voice for religious freedom.

Praying for the Criminal Cases Against China’s House Churches
“Arise, O God, plead your own cause; remember how the foolish man reviles you all day long.” (Psalm 74:22)
1/2
It is hard to read Psalm 74 without thinking of the criminal cases facing China’s house churches today.
The psalmist sees the sanctuary destroyed, the enemy acting freely in God’s dwelling place, and God’s people put to shame. He does not treat all this as merely human misfortune, nor does he pray only for his own deliverance from suffering. He cries out to God because what has been trampled is not only human dignity but also the name of God.
Psalm 74 is a prayer offered from among the ruins. Again and again the psalmist asks: O God, why have you cast us off? How long will the enemy revile your name? They have destroyed the places of worship and burned the sanctuary, as if God had lost his power and could no longer save.
Yet the psalmist does not conclude that God has failed. He turns to God’s works of old and remembers the Lord who created heaven and earth and rules over all things. The present reality may seem dark, but God’s sovereignty has not vanished because of it.
Today, as pastors, preachers, believers, and co-workers in China’s house churches face criminal prosecution for gathering, giving, evangelizing, and other church activities, we too need to think again: what is truly at stake in these cases?
When ordinary religious life is placed under criminal charges, when churches are accused of fraud, illegal business operations, or other crimes, and when pastors and believers must explain their faith under the pressure of interrogation, detention, and trial, we cannot regard this simply as the personal experience of a few individuals.
If the God people worship, the faith they hold, and the worship they offer according to conscience are treated as grounds for criminal guilt, then what is being challenged is not only the believers’ freedom but also God’s sovereignty in the human heart.
Of course, prayer does not mean refusing to face the facts, nor does it mean that cases involving churches need no examination of their specific circumstances. What we pray for is that faith not be arbitrarily stigmatized, that criminal charges not be used to suppress normal worship, and that human conscience not be forced to surrender its ultimate loyalty to power. Every accusation should be able to withstand the test of facts, evidence, and justice.
The most striking part of Psalm 74 is the psalmist’s final plea: “Arise, O God, plead your own cause.”
He does not ask to become the final judge himself, nor does he claim he can overturn everything by his own strength. He brings God’s name, the plight of the suffering people, and the enemy’s reviling together before God.
What does this mean for the house churches today?
We pray for those who are detained, for the pastors and co-workers who have lost their freedom, for the families living under pressure, and for the defense lawyers doing their utmost to protect the rights of the accused. But our prayers should not stop at asking God to grant someone an early release. Even more, we ask God himself to reveal the truth, so that distorted facts may be set right, unjust accusations may be scrutinized, and voices silenced by fear may be able to speak again.
We also ask God to keep the church from turning on itself in suspicion because of outside pressure, from rushing to condemn someone simply because they have been accused, and from forgetting the foundation of the faith when pastors are humiliated. Human weakness must be faced honestly, but human weakness cannot become an excuse for trampling justice. Believers need to encourage one another, but they must not let fear replace love and truth.
Lord, arise and plead the cause of your own name.
载自 S.W.

When your church is stigmatized, when worship is treated as a crime, when believers face criminal prosecution for holding fast to their faith, do not let lies have the final word. Remember those who cannot worship freely or bear witness openly, and give us courage to speak honestly even in the darkness, and to keep our conscience even under pressure.
We do not know when justice will be fully revealed, nor how the present cases will end. But we believe that God does not need human power to prove that he is God, and he does not lose his sovereignty because of earthly judgments.
May those on trial receive justice, may the oppressed receive comfort, and may the church remain faithful to the truth in the midst of tribulation.
Arise, O God, plead your own cause. May all on earth see that human power is not the highest power, and human verdicts are not the final verdict. Amen.

这一年,我们经历了太多艰难:牧者们失去的自由和苦难,家属的泪水、漫长的等待和煎熬,一次又一次向神的呼求;
