HMP Lewes and HMP Wormwood Scrubs inspections: Both knackered old jails w/major challenges but clear from both (cf staff surveys) that leadership & safety culture are turning things around. Both foundational to hope. Always important to recognise good work in v. difficult places.

I spent the morning outside HMP Wormwood Scrubs as prisoners left on the early release scheme.
Some hid their faces, leaving alone. Others hugged family members.
One man, who had served in the same prison, was waiting for his stepson. He said inmates were ‘treated like dogs’.

To create space, we’re changing the proportion of time some offenders spend in prison.
