Speaking out against the #LoanCharge. 100,000 people are being denied their statutory rights because, in HMRC’s “opinion”, they don’t deserve a fair hearing.

A new criminal offence would make it illegal for the Prime Minister to lie to you. The lawmakers making it are cutting themselves out.
The vote is expected in December. Ask me in the comments how you can help.

Another helpful #Budget2026 piece from Helen Miller, this one on the flaws in Founders' Relief... 👇
(In short, "the very conditions designed to target the relief more precisely will distort entrepreneurs’ decisions in a very long list of bizarre ways.")
The more I've dug into the details of Founders' Relief, the more bonkers I think it is
It incentivises entrepreneurs to change behaviour in ways that would be bad for productivity
I'll write more about this. For now: an @ft article with summary ft.com/content/636fd85e-2f5f…

The Budget brought relief for some, but left many contractors footing the bill.
The chancellor raised the National Minimum Wage and the National Living Wage by 3.9%.
However, Labour is cutting the Business Asset Disposal Relief lifetime limit from £1 million to £500,000 from 6 April 2027.
It is also adding two percentage points to property income tax, and frozen thresholds risk pulling contractors into higher bands.
IR35 reform remains sidelined.

HMRC mistook me for a contraband smuggler, chased me for 132k and instigated bankruptcy proceeding before acknowledging their mistake. If they had been able to raid my bank accounts it would have destroyed me. #memoir #ginoscontraband

From 2029 the self-employed pay last year's tax and this year's in the same twelve months. The OBR puts the overlap at £17bn of extra cash from this cohort in one year. Same tax, just all at once.
Self employed to face new cash flow burdens as Chancellor plans to take their tax in advance every month bit.ly/4yMr6hn so much for cutting unnecessary form filling!

As one of the MPs who has campaigned tirelessly on behalf of the people who face financial ruin because of #LoanCharge, I cannot believe what this FOI reveals. There needs to be a full and open inquiry, not a govt stitch up.

EXPOSED BY FOI: Here’s the email from/on behalf of @HMRCgovuk head @JimHarraHMRC to the supposedly ‘independent’ #LoanCharge review asking for sections of the final report to be changed or removed.
There must now be an inquiry into the #LoanChargeScandal

How will people who don’t get paid regularly or until long after they have done the work be able to cope? Has no one in the Government ever been self employed?

Companies with less than £1.5m taxable profit pay corporation tax 9 months and 1 day after their accounting year-end. It's highly unlikely that any self-employed person would make anywhere near £1.5m taxable profit, because at that level the benefits of incorporation are substantial. So this proposal is significantly harsher for self-employed people. It will inevitably force many of them to incorporate.

The problem, I think, is that HMRC treats self-employed people as disguised employees, not small businesses. So it wants them to pay income tax on a monthly basis as employees do. PAYE for the self-employed.

The next Conservative government will fundamentally change HMRC’s treatment of the smallest businesses and the self-employed.
(And yes I am well aware of the deficiencies of previous governments on that front).
