You could write master’s thesis (psychology) about this video
Kathy Bates says she was sure she never thanked her mother in her Misery Oscar speech, then the interviewer showed her the tape "She gave up her retirement because I was born so late in life to them." "When I won the Oscar for Misery, she said, I don't know what all the excitement about, you didn't discover the cure for cancer." "Why did I think I didn't thank her?" "Because she should have had my life." "I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she'd given up." Her mom's whole review of the Oscar was that she didn't cure cancer, and Kathy still believed she had shorted her that night. Then she watches herself thank her mom at home, right there in the speech. Some people never stop trying to pay their parents back. You can hear it in how quiet she gets at the end. ft: @CBSSunday CBS Sunday Morning on youtube

Here mother must have reminded her of everything she had given up constantly. I know a survivor when I see one.

seeing her realize her mom was intentionally tuning out her fame is like watching years of emotional baggage instantly vanish

do you think her mom was constantly rubbing all those sacrifices in her face or was it just obvious from how she carries herself

The fact she never went back and watched the clip of her win because of the guilt her mother instilled. She turned what should have been one of the biggest moments in Kathy’s life into a negative experience. The way you see her shoulder get lighter in the video is heartbreaking

They booing you, but you’re right. She really rationalized her mother‘s shady response by believing she hadn’t thanked her and being shown she did, really shook her

Its like you can see the weight being lifted off her and her understanding her mom was actively choosing to be ignorant to her own daughters fame

Literally what internalizing a narcissist’s every whim looks like.

A lot of mothers who never made anything of themselves HATE when their daughters succeed so they have to put them down to humble them. She’s almost 80 and is still dealing with childhood trauma.

it’s tragic that a parent would make their child feel this way for so long

I thought exactly this when I saw this video yesterday. There's a psychological reason she didn't remember that she had thanked her mom. Her pushback to being told that she had. Her dramatic, emotional reaction to finding out she had been wrong all these years. INCREDIBLE video.

Watching her expression change from shock to pain to relief. She carried that for so long

It was such a painful core memory that Kathy never watched the speech herself. Her moment of accomplishment just right there on YouTube for decades and she never looked at it.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a human being say “thank you” and mean it more than she does in this video. Absolutely profound.

So true. Every time this video pops up I'm astounded with how her mother could treat her with such cruelty. I hope Kathy reconciled with her feelings after discovering this.
