My best friend asked me to crash at his place for a few weeks while my apartment got fixed. His younger sister was already staying there for the summer. I got in late on the first night. The place was quiet, so I figured everyone was asleep. I dropped my bag, stripped down, and headed for the bathroom to wash the travel off me. The door wasn’t locked. I was already under the water when it opened. Her: “Oh—shit. Sorry. I thought you were my brother.” I yanked the shower curtain halfway across, water still running. Me: “Definitely not your brother.” She stood there for a second too long, eyes dragging down my chest before she caught herself and looked away. She was in an oversized T-shirt and nothing else that I could see. Her: “He said someone was staying. He didn’t say you’d be… occupying the bathroom naked at midnight.” Me: “Didn’t know anyone else was up. Door was open.” Her: “My fault. I should’ve knocked.” She didn’t leave immediately. Her eyes flicked back once more, then she bit her lip like she was trying not to smile. Her: “I’ll… let you finish. Towels are in the cabinet.” I finished fast, wrapped a towel around my waist, and stepped out. She was still in the hallway, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. Me: “You waiting to make sure I didn’t drown?” Her: “Just making sure you found clothes. Or… whatever you were planning to put on.” Me: “Planning to sleep. That a problem?” Her: “Not if you keep the towel on. My brother will lose his mind if he sees you walking around like that.” I went to the spare room. Ten minutes later there was a soft knock. She was still in the T-shirt. Her: “Couldn’t sleep. You?” Me: “Not really.” She stepped inside and closed the door. Her: “He told me not to bother you. Said you’re just a friend crashing here.”
