Too often, warnings come before disasters, but resources arrive only after the damage is done. This must change.
Today in Mombasa, at the 2nd Eastern Africa Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action, officially opened by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, H.E. @Kipmurkomen, I called for a decisive shift from early warning to early action, backed by predictable financing, stronger institutions and empowered communities.
Our success must be measured not by the disasters we respond to, but by the lives and livelihoods we protect before they strike.

The @IGADLeadership Alumni Network this afternoon convened a regional webinar to explore how climate-related challenges can be transformed into opportunities for resilience, innovation, and sustainable development. The webinar was held in collaboration with the Ethiopian Youth for Peace and Development (EYPD) and other partners.
In his remarks, ILA Alumni Regional Chairperson Ashenafi Mebratu underscored the importance of youth leadership in driving climate action, noting that young people, who make up a significant share of the region’s population, are among those most affected by climate change. He called on relevant public and private institutions to support youth-led climate initiatives and empower young people to take an active role in building climate-resilient communities.
Dr. Geoffrey Sabiiti, a senior climate expert from @IGAD_CPAC, highlighted the various interventions that #IGAD continues to implement to address the impacts of climate change in the region. He noted that climate change transcends national borders, making cross-border cooperation essential.
Other panellists in the Webinar included Dr. Tahira Mohammed of @ILRI, Dr. Kassahun Ture of Addis Ababa University and Ms Sylvia Mkomwa of Global Impact Transformation (GIT). They emphasised the importance of people-centred approaches to climate action and integrating climate interventions into national planning and budgeting.
Many thanks to our speakers, partners, and all participants for contributing to this timely conversation. #Youth4ClimateLeadership #ClimateResilience #RisingWithIGAD

We completed our IGAD Leadership Academy (ILA) @IGADLeadership workshop on Media, Information Integrity and Democratic Processes.
This was not just a training but a regional platform for jounalists from Kenya, South Sudan and Somalia to share experiences ahead of upcoming elections in the three countries.
Public Interest journalism, News verification tools and steps, Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference and AI are among topics that we extensively discussed during the three-day workshop.
In country-specific groups, participants at the ILA workshop developed publishable media stories addressing public-interest issues in their respective countries. They examined misinformation and explored how reporting can promote informed public participation. The stories will be published across various media platforms.
Participants committed to applying skills gained during the workshop to advance responsible journalism and information integrity in their respective countries.

Three days of learning, sharing and challenging our thinking in Machakos, Kenya.
I had the privilege of representing South Sudan alongside four colleagues at the IGAD Leadership Academy’s regional discussion on Media and Information Integrity in Democratic Processes, held in collaboration with the Government of Japan.
Grateful to my fellow South Sudanese colleagues for trusting and selecting me to take part in the panel discussion on ethics, trust and accountability in journalism.
During the discussion, I told colleagues in the region that it is possible for journalists to balance the lies and still miss the truth when verification is undermined and independent perspectives are overlooked. Giving competing claims equal space does not automatically make journalism fair or accurate. We have to verify, seek evidence, provide context and establish what the facts support.
One thing I learned from the training was the concept of information laundering, and how questionable information can gain credibility when repeated through seemingly credible sources and eventually pushed into the mainstream media.
I appreciate @IGADLeadership for creating this space for journalists across the region to learn, share experiences and challenge our practice.
Special appreciation to @DanielMwaka, an alumnus of the Academy, for recommending me. I take such recommendations seriously and always strive to make sure the person who recommends me does not regret doing so.
Grateful for the experience, the connections and the lessons, and to our facilitators, Prof. @ShinodaHideaki and Dr. Sam Kamau, for their knowledge, insight and thoughtful discussions.
