π¨Every new COVID-19 (re)infection elevates your cardiovascular risk profile. Even mild cases can raise the odds of a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and other CV events for months to years afterward. Risk is higher with more severe illness, yes, but itβs certainly not limited to severe disease. Why are the eligibility criteria so different for Covid vs Flu vaccines?
Hardly anyone is eligible for a Covid vaccine despite studies showing that BOTH the acute & long-term impacts of Covid are comparatively WORSE than flu on almost every measure.
COVID-19 had a comparatively higher burden of health loss than seasonal influenza in both the acute and post-acute phase

Covid infections in England are continuing to increase. The overall Covid risk level remains High and, as of 18 October, 1 in every 149 people in England were infected. Full precautions, including a PPE mask, are strongly recommended in ALL indoor places.

There's so much wrong with infection prevention and control policy in the UK that it's hard to know where to start. But it's important to keep challenging and chipping away π
Our open letter to UK infection control leads went today.
Patients can be asked to remove their FFP2 or FFP3 mask, or swap it for a surgical one, while staff can now choose a respirator if treating a patient with respiratory symptoms.

I can believe it. I don't want to, but I can. There has been so much learning about preventing and controlling airborne aerosol-transmiited infections that NHS leaders have shown extraordinary, unwavering dedication to completely ignoring. It's negligence on an epic scale.
I cannot believe this. The 2024 NHS pandemic plan states the following generic assumptions:
βit will not be possible to halt the spread of a new pandemic virus, and it would be a waste of public health resources and capacity to attempt to do so.β

Meanwhile, in the UK, the number of kids with Long Covid in England & Scotland nearly DOUBLED in a year between Mar 2023 & Mar 2024, rising to over 111K.
Thatβs over 1K NEW cases in kids PER WEEK across the year.
That was over 2 years ago now.

πSuccess is not a word commonly seen in relation to securing positive change to infection prevention and control policy but I'm delighted to have some to report, having written to point out that it is an error to say no infectious person should wear an FFP3 mask π§΅
They responded to my query to say "the Guidance Team will review the wording and consider amendments to improve clarity". It seems they did. Here's what it says now π π
ALT There are two main types of respirators used within health and care settings in Scotland: tight-fitting respirators (FFP3) that require the wearer to be face fit tested, and to perform a fit check on each use loose fitting respirators (often referred to as powered hoods, powered respirators or PAPR) Valved FFP3 respirators and powered respirator hoods should never be worn by an infectious person as the respirator is designed to filter incoming air and not the air being expelled by the wearer.
