And that fanbase has earned some perspective here — we've stuck with Interpol through the rough patches and the safe patches alike, and we'll keep listening passionately no matter what. But it's worth naming what those last few records were really doing: writing Interpol songs that sound like Interpol without pushing into new territory. The Other Side of Make-Believe was the clearest example — solid, recognizable, but emotionally a bit distant. This new album closes that distance. The songs feel reached-for rather than assembled from the usual toolkit, and that's what makes it connect on a level the last record didn't. Much more orchestral that we'd expect, too. Nearer to Our Love To Admire in that regard. What's most encouraging is the bigger picture it confirms: even within Interpol's signature sound, every album still manages its own distinct identity, and This Mirror Weighs a Ton speaks clearly to its own moment. Not a reinvention — but a record written to move people, not just maintain the brand.
