Factor portfolios are capital efficient. To build a pure value portfolio, you go long cheap and short expensive. For long-only strategies, you can start with the benchmark and add a L/S portfolio, increasing (long) exposure to value and reducing (short) exposure to expensive.

Almost broke my arm last night doing BJJ. Two things came to mind: 1) I should quit before I actually get injured. 2) I will be miserable if I quit.

john bollinger invented the most famous indicator in trading. after 46 years he can tell if your system will fail before you finish explaining it: "you can tell immediately whether it's going to be successful by how many lines it is. if it takes two or three lines to describe it, the odds are it could be a very good system. if it takes 150 lines to describe it, the odds are it's going to be a terrible system." "we want to understand what we do on an intuitive level. the only way to do that is if it's simple." complexity in a trading system is usually just overfitting.

Sometimes what gets you wealthy may not keep you wealthy. What do we mean by that? Consider an investor with $1M in Micron stock, and $1M in a US Large Blend ETF. Keeping the Micron stock means holding a lot of undiversified risk. Getting rid of it may mean triggering a taxable event that would likely result in lower compounding in the future. So what should the investor do? One possible solution is to contribute part of the stock and ETF into a 351 exchange. While the 351 exchange will not fully eliminate concentration, and requires a certain baseline of diversification to begin with, it can help meaningfully reduce concentration. Here’s how. With a 351 exchange, the investor must be able to uphold two main diversification rules: 1) The largest holding cannot be over 25% of the contributing portfolio. 2) The largest five holdings cannot be over 50% of the contributing portfolio. In this case, the investor must ensure that Micron does not make up over 25% of the contributed portfolio. Assuming that Micron makes up 1.5% of the US Large Blend ETF, the investor is able to contribute roughly $313K of Micron stock, along with the $1M of the ETF to the 351 exchange. This would result in roughly $687K in Micron single stock exposure, and $1.313M in the new ETF. If this situation sounds familiar, and you are looking for a 351 exchange offering to help further reduce concentration, we have good news! You can contribute your appreciated holdings to the Alpha Architect U.S. Equity 5 ETF, ticker $AAUD, today. AAUD seeks to deliver plain U.S. large blend exposure with a strategic dividend management overlay. If you’d like to learn more, we will be running a webinar on September 10. You can't make this up: At 8:15 AM ET yesterday, the 10Y Note Yield was trading at 4.68% when the US Treasury announced it would be increasing bond buybacks to $4 billion. The yield fell to a low of 4.63% as the US Treasury pledged to provide "liquidity support." Exactly 24 hours later, the 10Y Note Yield is ABOVE levels seen prior to the announcement, at 4.71%. It's going to take a lot more intervention to tame this beast.
It's official. On July 31st, we called for US government intervention as long-term borrowing costs hit 2008 levels. Today, it happened. The US Treasury is DOUBLING buybacks to $4 billion per operation for "liquidity support." What comes next? Let us explain. (a thread)

Inflationary market cycles are not a thing of the past. In fact, over the past five years Treasuries have realized negative returns. And while investors own bonds for diversification and income, positive returns definitely help! So... What should you do? While bonds can help diversify during times of declining interest rates, the past five years have demonstrated that inflationary market cycles are not a thing of the past. With inflation uncertainty still looming and bond yields ticking higher, investors looking for true diversification have been left scrambling for answers. Should you... Sell? Hold? Pray?! Join Alpha Architect on Thursday, August 20 to see where the bond market stands, how to position yourself for the fourth quarter and beyond in an unknown future, and why we believe our framework of fast & slow via the Alpha Architect Tail Risk ETF, ticker CAOS, and the Alpha Architect High Inflation and Deflation ETF, ticker HIDE, is an ideal complement to a traditional bond portfolio. Intermediate-government funds have at least 90% of their bond holdings in bonds backed by the US government or by government-linked agencies. This backing minimizes the credit risk of these portfolios, as the US government is unlikely to default on its debt. These portfolios have durations typically between 3.5 and 6.0 years. As America turns 250, I keep coming back to a simple idea: this country is built on the dream of a win-win. You build something useful, create value, and make the pie bigger; your creation makes someone better off, and they pay you for it. Your gains don't require someone else's loss because by construction, what you build has to be a win-win, or it's back to the drawing board. America’s success comes down to one thing: a win-win culture. But this culture is hard to maintain because it goes against human nature: 1+1 = 3 is wacky math, and coveting your neighbor’s property is instinctual. Nevertheless, despite our worst instincts to think the opposite, a win-win culture makes everyone better off because the pie does get bigger. Alpha Architect fully embraces America’s win-win culture. We started with research, a small team, and a willingness to grind — not expensive marketing, a fancy office, or an army of salespeople, because all that leads to high-priced products (not a win for clients!). Our goal was a win-win: differentiated investment products at affordable prices, paired with the education to help investors understand them and sharpen their thinking. The market owes us nothing. Investors owe us nothing. We have to earn trust every day. We need to deliver value so others can get more, and maybe, if they are feeling generous, they’ll pay us a share of the value created. And we like that arrangement: Win-win. As America turns 250, we know we owe it all to this country and the culture that has been fostered over this time. America offers the freedom to build something useful, serve others, and keep proving that win-win is still possible. Semper Fidelis! Wes & the Alpha Architect team
