Let me do that last post differently one point at a time. #1 Economy & Fiscal Policy 1960: Free competitive enterprise is “the most creative and productive form of economic order.” Aim for ~5% average annual growth. Full employment as a paramount goal. Raise minimum wage to $1.25/hour. Balanced budget (except in recession/emergency) with no increase in tax rates; close loopholes; surplus to reduce debt. End “tight money” high-interest policies. 2024: Grow the economy “from the bottom up and middle out, not the top down.” Heavy emphasis on public investment (infrastructure, CHIPS Act, Inflation Reduction Act clean energy/manufacturing). Raise federal minimum wage to $15. Pass the PRO Act (strengthen unions, oppose right-to-work). No federal tax increase for those under $400,000; raise corporate rate to 28%; minimum 25% tax on billionaires; close various loopholes. #2 Civil Rights, Race & Equality 1960: Strongest civil rights plank in party history at the time (over Southern objections). Equal access to voting, schools, jobs, housing, and public facilities. Eliminate literacy tests and poll taxes. Fair Employment Practices Commission. Begin school desegregation compliance by 1963. End segregation in federal services/contracts. Equality for women (equal pay). Focus on color-blind equal opportunity under the Constitution. 2024: Racial equity, closing the racial wealth and gender pay gaps. Voting rights protection. Explicit support for LGBTQ+ rights and “gender-affirming” care. Environmental justice. Broader equity framework beyond the 1960-style anti-discrimination focus. #3 Immigration 1960: Eliminate the national-origins quota system as discriminatory and contrary to American principles. Prioritize family reunification, skills, and a larger share of refugees. More open, less restrictionist approach. 2024: Open and “Secure the border and fix the broken immigration system.” Support for stronger enforcement, more Border Patrol resources, asylum reforms, and the bipartisan border bill. Expand legal pathways (including additional visas) and support for Dreamers/long-term undocumented, while emphasizing deterrence of illegal immigration. Notable shift toward border security relative to recent prior platforms. #4 Defense, Foreign Policy & Security 1960: Close the “missile gap” and other military shortfalls vs. the Soviets. Strong conventional and nuclear deterrent. Firm opposition to Communist aggression. Support NATO; shift some emphasis from military to economic aid where possible. Arms control with safeguards. 2024: Maintain military spending at previous levels in 2008. Strengthen NATO without imposed increases by the Trump administration and alliances. Support for Ukraine without restrictions and monitor Israel support. Climate as a major foreign policy priority. Diplomacy and American leadership alongside security. #5 Social Issues (selected) 1960: Abortion not a platform issue (pre-Roe). Focus on traditional welfare expansion, housing, education, health for the aging, and civil liberties. Gun control not a major theme. 2024: Central priority: restore Roe v. Wade as national law (codify abortion rights); protect IVF and contraception. Gun safety (assault weapons ban, universal background checks). Paid family/medical leave, affordable child care. Climate crisis as a top domestic and global issue. Overall character: 1960: The 1960 platform was a Cold War-era New Deal/Fair Deal document—pro-growth free enterprise with strong full-employment goals, fiscal caution outside emergencies, anti-communist defense priorities, and a landmark (for its time) push for racial equality through equal opportunity and desegregation. 2024: The 2024 platform retains pro-labor and promotes Communistic and Socialistic activist-government instincts but places heavier weight on progressive Socialistic redistribution, climate, reproductive rights, identity-focused equity, and a more security-conscious border stance than many recent Democratic platforms.
