Thank you John Higdon and Rusty Knox for telling the truth of NCGA's overbearance. Charlotte (35%) and Raleigh-Durham-Chapel hill (29%) represent almost 2/3 of the state's economy but yet we have to arrive hat in hand asking for our rations. It needs to stop. We need home rule.
"Today, we decide based on Raleigh’s wants and needs.”
Two members of CRTPO resigned after Wednesday night's vote to move forward with the controversial I-77 South toll lane project. @cbowyer_tv

It's official, Charlotte will have toll lanes on the southern part of I-77. Not a surprise at all...BUT I want to recognize the integrity of the mayors of Davidson and Matthews who resigned after the vote. And four Charlotte City council members did too.

When Charlotte City Council shut down the I-77 toll lane project in May, it gave folks in this city a reason to believe that democracy and community organizing could still work despite all signs to the contrary at the federal and state levels.

OK here we go: I-77 Live Thread.
Charlotte City Council just took a post-zoning break.
Looks like we’re starting I-77 project public hearing soon.

CRBA is the largest voice in favor of the project — are they only in favor due Cintra’s membership status? This is a question that requires immediate attention.
Too many unanswered questions to move forward with this project
NEW: We dug into public records on HNTB, NCDOT's paid advisor on I-77S toll lanes. 4 former NCDOT execs now work there. It's a top donor to the group lobbying FOR the project. We're not alleging wrongdoing — we're asking for disclosure. sustaincharlotte.org/public-…

This is just NOT the answer for Charlotte's congestion issues. Repeal the cap on state transit funding, give us the money to fast-track the Red Line and make incremental changes on I-77 to fix obvious bottlenecks and gradually build out a new HOV and Bus Lane.

1st you put toll lanes on I-485 and create a bypass. Next you make I-77 local-only for through trucks, drop a couple exits (West Blvd come to mind), smooth out some bottlenecks, and gradually add an HOV/bus lane over the next 5 years using the highway funding capped by the NCGA.

The solution is to significantly increase the frequency of every transit route currently paralleling I-77.
You won’t get most cars off the road but you can take a lot of them off.
The view from NCDOT.
Ultimately NCDOT does whatever CRTPO tells them to. You want the project dead? It’s dead.
But, the region is rejecting $700 million and starting over. Any new project has to go through the whole process again. It may be 10 years before a new project is even considered. The $700 million will go to other communities and projects.
All while traffic on I-77 gets worse. 160,000 vehicles use 77 a day and this part of 77 has a crash rate 2.5x higher than the statewide average, per DOT
Charlotte is better off with this vote. Remember that communities along this corridor continue to live with impact and harm from past decisions. @NCDOT now has an opportunity to start fresh and work WITH our community in good faith to build trust and repair the corridor.
Replying to @JoeBrunoWSOC9
BREAKING: THE I-77 TOLL LANE PROJECT IS DEAD. A SUPERMAJORITY OF CRTPO MEMBERS VOTED TO RESCIND SUPPORT OF THE PROJECT.
These are terrible suggestions.
I'm at the MPTA retreat. The MPTA is discussing the Silver Line and ways to get the light rail closer to Matthews.
An engineering firm studying the Silver Line's design is recommending consolidating the Remount/Berryhill stations, eliminating the Summit and First Ward stations, moving the 11th Street station and shifting the Bojangles Coliseum station from in front of the arena to near the highway. Even with all of these changes though, there is not enough money to expand to Sharon Amity Road, let alone Matthews.

Lost in the debate: Democrats have been totally screwed by Republican gerrymandering nationwide.
Republicans **currently** have a 16 seat gerrymandering advantage according to the non-partisan @BrennanCenter.
Gerrymandering handed the GOP majorities in the House in ‘22 and ‘24.
