Here is the permanent link to my inaugural lecture. Global Security: Is Law Our Last Hope?

“Law cannot make up for the lack of political moral courage of leaders who refuse to apply it.”
Inspiring lecture by Dame Louise Richardson Chair @JaninaDill @BlavatnikSchool on the role of law in promoting global security as a moral goal.
Why do normal people care about international law? ⚖️
📜 Ben Valentino and I have a paper out in International Studies Quarterly in which try to provide an answer.
We conclude that ordinary people, here US respondents, attribute relatively little legitimate authority to int law.
==> SO: illegality adds little independent weight to the balance of reasons. However, it is an important means of communicating about a policy.
A thorough, grim documentary on IDF claims to investigate violations of #IHL in Palestine.
I was glad to comment on the duty to investigate derived from the #GenevaConventions.
Investigations mustn't be a smokescreen to avoid accountability & leave victims without answers.
Hundreds of IDF investigations into killings. But still no public outcomes, years on.
Here’s how we investigated how the Israeli military investigates itself.

"Three years into this operation, some of these investigations should have been concluded."

NEW: Hundreds of Israeli military investigations into killings without public outcome, BBC Verify finds.
Some of the cases are nearly three years old. One of the deadliest reportedly killed at least 93 people, including 6 women and 11 children.

I never understood this take. Sure, in academia you have to be part of committees and stuff, but it's the best place for research agendas that depend on independence, transparency, and freedom. I effing love it here.
I also think that on a per capita basis, the average CS grad student completely dunks on Anthropic when it comes to research production. Sure, Anthropic has a big footprint, but it literally has thousands of people making that happen.

Yesterday saw far too many deliberate attacks on civilians and civilians infrastructures and war crimes, often thousands of miles away from what may be termed frontlines.
There are deadly escalations the world over, fuelled by the appalling "leadership" of global predators and the cowardice or self-imposed paralysis of too many others.
And people die. In their thousands. killed in their beds, in buses, at the airport, in their tents, on their lands.
Resistance is (still) possible. Standing up to one attack on international law at a time. Refusing the normalisation of violence and wars and human rights violations where diplomacy should prevail. Responding loudly and through actions, to sickening statements, to sickening "deals." Actually implementing sanctions. imposing Blocking Statutes. Creating strong alliances.
These are dangerous moments. Resistance is possible. It demands courage and prioritising humanity.

Lifting sanctions on Russia, imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court. What a disgrace.

"Let me be clear: the ICC does not yield to external threats that will only benefit those who commit the most serious crimes"
The ICC strongly rejects US sanctions against the institution:

Law-abiding States have nothing to fear from the ICC.
Ukraine accepted ICC jurisdiction and signed the Rome Statute.
The ICC issued arrest warrants for Putin, four Russian generals, and a Russian official.
Only the ICC can prosecute a sitting Head of State like Putin.
As a State Party to the Rome Statute, Ukraine reaffirms its support for the International Criminal Court and for its independence and integrity.
For Ukraine, the ICC is a vital institution in our pursuit of accountability for Russian atrocities and delivering justice for victims and survivors.
We remain committed to working with other States Parties to the Rome Statute to ensure the Court's effective functioning.
“Why would you need courage to speak the truth? You interpret the law. You look at the all the facts.”
That is all the ICC ever did.
We R witnessing a frontal assault by the US gov on the rule of law & the int institutions that have helped avoid WWIII for the last 80 years.
