Melanie Joly just said the quiet part out loud.
Canada is “doubling down on products that will have an impact politically on Republican states.”
They’re openly choosing which American industries to target based on U.S. election maps instead of Canadian jobs.
Steel mills are idling. Auto parts plants are cutting shifts. Trucking companies are parking rigs because fuel and input costs keep climbing. Food bank use keeps setting records.
Meanwhile the people making these calls still collect full salaries, expense accounts, and pensions that don’t depend on whether a plant in Ontario or Quebec stays open.
This isn’t strategy for Canadian workers. It’s using Canadian industries as leverage in someone else’s political fight.
The layoffs don’t hit the people writing the talking points. They hit the people who still have to pay rent and buy groceries here.

I am willing to bet the US State Department and Treasury has lots of documented statements from many of our political leaders like this. I suspect the Trump Administration will be taking further action after the midterms. As mentioned …not sure how Canada is better served by this..🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️
You know what? I'm fine with that. No industry in the US should depend on anyone or anything overseas. Make it all in house and then no one can weaponize it against you
I’m not against that idea, it’s actually a smart idea
However when a country has been made to be so dependent… You cannot change that like a light switch without completely crashing like falling down the stairs in the dark!
The millions and BILLIONS could have been used to create refineries, hospitals, schools etc
Yet, we give millions to help gender studies in 3rd world countries, more millions to create affordable housing in foreign countries while not being able to make the promises commitments here
It sounds good on paper, but those saying it actually cannot complete a single task that isn’t unethical or that looks like complete corruption eg Green Slush Fund
Yet they claim to be innocent??
Replying to @MarkJCarney
@MarkJCarney @melaniejoly Why is this even allowed?
The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa released a list of quotes from Canadian politicians—including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly (five times), Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and others—that it says show plans to influence American politics by pressuring U.S. businesses and targeting individual states in response to tariffs. Prime Minister Carney did not directly address the specific quotes. He simply noted that the U.S. started the trade actions and that everything Canada has done is in the interest of Canadian workers and families. Ford said he has no interest in interfering in American elections.
Canada has spent years accusing other countries of foreign interference in its own elections, launching public inquiries, and treating the issue as a serious threat to democratic integrity. Now Canadian ministers and a premier are on record discussing how to pressure American companies and states—precisely the kind of cross-border political pressure Ottawa has condemned when directed at us.
This is the same pattern of selective rules: Quebec gets special immigration powers because it is “distinct,” massive EV and industrial subsidies are announced by proclamation with no parliamentary vote and no clear repayment conditions, and now trade retaliation that looks like election interference is waved away as defending Canadian interests. The federal government cannot keep demanding one standard for everyone else while operating under a different standard itself.
At what point does this become untenable? When the deficit is already producing record debt-service costs, when households cannot afford the products the subsidies are supposed to create, and when the same government that lectures others about interference is caught describing how it will lean on foreign businesses and jurisdictions. Citizens are the ones who will pay the bill and live with the consequences. The double standard is not sustainable.
More liberal bullshit
We need an Election!
This is Canada where we have the Most Corrupt Government in Canadian History!
The Liberals don't win fairly,
they Cheat and will do anything they need to do to win their seats.
The corrupt libs honestly don't care about Canadians or how much the screw them over.
100% corrupt, 100% of them. A conservative win would at least open the door to investigations of the massive corruption schemes they've managed to cover up by closing down committees and/or moving them in camera and by their corrupt appointments. They can't afford to allow their crimes to be exposed, they'll cheat every step of the way. It's at the point of self preservation, so they'll get more and more aggressive. Time for election, vote Conservative to put this nightmare behind us.
Canada has been a resource colony for the Bank of England for centuries.
Now it has been fashioned into a weapon to attack its best friend and partner so Canadians are forced to burn their house down and leave the country they built so a new tenant for the colony can occupy the premises for more banker resource extraction.
Its not surprising the unethical, immoral Liberals would cheat, obstruct and lie about their tactical interference activity in the USA general elections. I mean, after all just look at how they obtained their majority right here in Canada!
Would you blab about it in public for all to see?
Stupid or arrogant ?
Careless or deliberate?
Modest or braggart?
I’m pretty sure Joley isn’t demonstrating her healthy pride here - the elections have not occurred and her blathering of “look at me” paints a picture of a “fragile core”.
Its too bad Canadians see this person as someone to look up too!
The Grandiosity of self-view is revealing. The Liberals have achieved exactly ZERO of their campaign punch list 18 months in. Canadians are in a very tough cycle right now!
Hang on there!
@melaniejoly @grok 'Is targeting specific republican states with trade, to influence voting in the mid-terms considred election interference..in any sense of the term?'
