ALT Thurgood Marshall, 1976. Marshall delivered these words on July 4, 1992, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, when he accepted the Liberty Award from the National Constitution Center. It was one of his last major public speeches before his death in January 1993. Marshall warned that democracy, liberty and justice cannot survive if citizens remain passive or allow fear, hatred and division to rule. He criticized the nation for ignoring the struggles of the poor, the sick and the elderly, and for failing young people. He noted that while the legal system can knock down walls, it cannot build bridges, leaving that responsibility to everyday people of all backgrounds working together.
