My latest for @BBCAfrica: 🔊 While some Arab countries may hold dated views about modern-day Africa, the UAE 🇦🇪 is busy building bridges with the continent through arts and culture. @aidamuluneh @sharjahart

Don’t need long analysis on US elections. Prices, perceived corruption, needless war, nonstop drama. American voters will not be taken for granted. But the Democrats didn’t win, the Republicans lost. Will be an interesting two years!

From Recognition to Representation: Israel Establishes Its Diplomatic Footprint in Hargeisa 🇮🇱 Israel’s Ambassador Michael Lotem has formally presented his credentials to President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi in Hargeisa, followed by the laying of the cornerstone for Israel’s future embassy. The developments mark a significant step in relations established on December 26, 2025. With Somaliland’s embassy in Jerusalem, high-level visits and now a permanent Israeli diplomatic presence taking shape, the relationship is moving from recognition to institution-building. A new chapter in the Republic of Somaliland’s international relations.

#BREAKING Hugely positive development from Somalia. I will try to report it as accurately as I can and share my thoughts and analysis. Multiple senior credible Somali sources have confirmed to me in the last two days that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (HSM) is under severe pressure to step aside, allow a genuine inclusive dialogue, leading to a speedy national resolution of the bitter gridlock over elections. For the first time, domestic pressure is coming from HSM's inner circle. This is significant. It is reported that several senior politicians and clan leaders very close to HSM have been holding multiple meetings with the President to persuade him to abandon his direct elections plans, reach an accommodation with the SFC. The leaders warned him that the nation was at a moment of peril, that the patience of the citizens was running out and the situation untenable HSM is said to have complained bitterly about his allies, accusing them of 'abandoning' him when he needed them the most. He is also reported to have acted 'surprised' and 'disappointed' when confronted with credible reports of his growing unpopularity. This is not a good sign and suggests the President is still acting defensive and downplaying the monumental crisis the country faces. I have also been told that some Western states now see no other option but to lean on HSM to accept a 'transitional task force' to break the logjam, put the country back on track toward a credible vote and leadership change in 2027. HSM's dismantling of the dual executive structure, centralisation of power has eviscerated the old system of checks and balances and robust crisis management mechanism that created a safety valve for the state in times of crisis. The idea of a technocratic transition management team led by a prominent and respected Somali figure, with no vested interest in the next polls, makes perfect sense and can work. Before getting to that HSM must be compelled to step aside. That will not be easy. The President is stubborn, single-minded and averse to taking good counsel. Crucially, the neutral figure to lead the proposed transitional task force cannot be Hamza Barre, the current ceremonial PM. Hamza has lost all national credibility and influence and will likely be remembered as one of the worst PMs in recent years. That person has to be someone outside the government...

Israel's Ambassador to Somaliland Michael Lotem this week presented his credentials to President Abdirahman Irro. Lotem will operate as a non-resident for the time being. Israel has been allocated a property in Hargeisa to establish an Embassy. The timing is significant. Israel has just had an election that is inconclusive. Somaliland is a national security issue for Israel and the decision to extend formal recognition is bipartisan and will likely not be impacted by the outcome of the recent polls.

This would be insane.
Under pressure from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where enrichment is supposedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu has been pushing hard for one. “Bibi calls Trump about it every day,” says an informed observer. Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. After last week’s election results, he can’t form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers a deal with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, he is out as prime minister and on his way to ignominy, investigations and possibly jail. Netanyahu must stay close to Trump. He needs this war. To that end, he’s applied maximum pressure to his closest allies in the administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper. Both oppose a negotiated settlement to the war they’ve so grievously mismanaged; both are pushing to restart major combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA director John Ratcliffe are also following Netanyahu’s lead, as are leaders of the Democratic Party. In a recent meeting on the subject, former president Barack Obama said he opposes the current Iran peace deal being drafted in Doha. The rest of America’s longtime allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of more war. On September 27th, Netanyahu flew secretly to Abu Dhabi to enlist the UAE in his lobbying effort for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, Gulf economies are teetering. So are global energy and fertilizer markets. They won’t recover soon. Globally, there are a total of about 850 supertankers used to transport oil from producers to the rest of the world. In October alone, 11 of them were badly damaged in Hormuz. At this pace, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear strike would radically accelerate the destruction. Fallout from a ground explosion at Pickax Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf, poisoning the water supply for 100 million people. And those are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is every bit as exposed. No country other than the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already told at least two other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would free them to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same against each other, as would North Korea against Seoul. After the first nuclear strike, World War Three is inevitable. That war would be short and final. We’ve been sleepwalking toward this moment for months. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to make first use of so-called “battlefield nukes” easier and therefore more likely. No one in Washington in either party seems bothered by this. Now we’re on the brink of it. Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7, six days from now. To his credit, he’s hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his vice president, JD Vance, and to his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue a deal with Iran can be made. They’re right, though it won’t be simple. The Iranians are famously frustrating to negotiate with under any circumstances, and elements of that government have become more radical since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian leaders seem confused by how decisions are made in the West. (There is a widespread belief in Tehran, for example, that the United States government controls Israel.) But overall, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say there is consensus there that more war is bad for everyone and a deal is worth making. One group that hasn’t been consulted so far is the global population — the hundreds of millions of people who will be killed along with their children if Trump is pushed by Netanyahu into launching a nuclear strike next week. Now would be the time for them to speak up.

A journalist asked Zelensky: “Don’t you think Trump has made you a scapegoat for his own problems?” The Ukrainian president smiled knowingly and replied: “That is my answer.” The room erupted in laughter and applause.
Zelensky vows to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if allies provide air defense missiles “You decided that we shouldn’t attack Russian oil refineries. But they will keep attacking us. Then give us missiles so we can shoot down ballistic missiles,” he said. “We were attacked. Our people were killed. It is perfectly reasonable that we have the right to defend ourselves. All the analysis shows that Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries have no impact on prices,” the Ukrainian president added. Zelensky emphasized that the lifting of sanctions against Russia came as a surprise to everyone.

Trump says Somaliland differs from Somalia, but US policy hasn’t shifted, partly due to counterterrorism ties to Mogadishu. Red Sea turmoil is changing US priorities though, as Eritrea sanctions relief shows. Could Taiwan-style de facto recognition follow? hornhorizons.substack.com/p/…

Hard to argue against this point
Getachew Reda has returned to Mekelle for the first time since being pushed out of power and forced to leave the city, and he has been met with a remarkably warm public welcome. That image says more than a thousand political statements. The TPLF’s once-feared political machine looks shattered. Its monopoly over loyalty, fear, and political legitimacy is breaking down in plain sight. At this point, reviving TPLF in Tigray would require nothing short of a political resurrection. #Tigray. #Ethiopia
