Medford School District has put attendance specialists and family liaisons in place to reach out to families, and now more kids are showing up. That’s the kind of local leadership that works, and I am working to implement it everywhere in Oregon.

For years scientists believed that the damaged chromosomes found in cancer cells were simply a result of the disease. Then in 1972 a 47-year-old mother of four named Janet Rowley found evidence that challenged that belief.
At the time Rowley was working part-time at the University of Chicago studying photographs of chromosomes taken from patients with leukemia. She brought the photographs home, cut out images of the chromosomes, and arranged the tiny pieces into pairs across her dining room table. Her sons knew better than to sneeze nearby.
While studying the photographs Rowley noticed something that others had missed. Two chromosomes appeared to have exchanged pieces. The same rearrangement kept appearing in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. She had identified a specific genetic abnormality linked to a particular type of cancer.
Her discovery challenged the view that chromosome abnormalities were merely a consequence of cancer. Instead it suggested that changes in a cell’s genetic machinery could help cause the disease. Further research confirmed her findings. Decades later that discovery helped pave the way for imatinib, a targeted drug that transformed treatment for many people with chronic myeloid leukemia.
Her achievements earned her the National Medal of Science in 1998 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. She died in 2013 at the age of 88. Janet Rowley had spent hours arranging tiny pieces of chromosome photographs on her dining room table. In those pieces she found a clue that changed cancer research.
