AI in video games are a confusing topic to me.
@TimSweeneyEpic recently got a lot of flak for pushing AI in game development.
There are opinion pieces left and right condemning AI use in game development.
Here I am, having worked for ~6 months on a game I released on Steam last week. And my sin, apparently, was using AI and disclosing it.
The comment section was pretty clear on that.
It's confusing to me. AI is a tool. IDE is a tool. A programming language is a tool. A graphics API is a tool. We're just using tools.
I've been writing software for about 3 decades now, I'd like to think that I know what I'm doing and am pretty good at it. I see AI as an incredible productivity booster.
It does some things that I pride myself on being good at, such as teasing out a math formula or optimizing an algorithm better than me most of the time (with a lot of handholding, granted), but for the most part it makes things I find tedious - fast.
As I software engineer, and a game maker, I take relatively little pride in knowing a programming language, or remembering 100 shortcuts in an IDE, or knowing a programming language spec by heart.
I remember the first time I needed to make an animated 3d model, almost 15 years ago now, and it took me about a week of full-time effort to get anywhere. I didn't feel particularly proud, I felt frustrated, I had a clear idea, but the tool and its complexity were getting in the way. Well, the tools are better now. Blender is better, animation tools are better, and there are AI models that keep improving at an incredible pace.
Ultimately, when I write a piece of software, or work on a game - I rarely think about the tools, they are a means to an end, not the point in itself.

NIGHTBORNE is the first full test AI film I have made. It was made using Seedance 2.0.
I've been experimenting with AI for a couple of years, and it's now at the point where I want to tackle a full feature in this format. This is a 13-minute test start.
It was made with real concept artists, and features the faces and voices of 32 real people.
Barley Studios will be my new AI studio for creating my own films, the way Oats Studios was for traditional film and VFX. @Barleystudiosai

RIP the anti-AI movement in Hollywood 🪦💀👻
Netflix just told shareholders that 300 of its titles used Gen AI THIS YEAR!
0:00 The truth bomb
0:17 300 titles, straight from the shareholder letter
1:10 Scorsese storyboards with AI now
2:09 Shots that wouldn't exist = new jobs
2:34 Netflix's $1M GenMedia roles

It’s over. I’m quitting design.
A client of mine just created a logo with Fable 5, and the result left me speechless.
It understood the brand story, values, audience, strategy, and turned all of it into a smart, minimal symbol. A genuinely brilliant concept. The kind of idea that captures everything at once. Something I honestly don’t think I would have come up with myself.
And it didn’t just nail the idea. It executed the design pixel-perfectly.
So I raise the white flag.
My skepticism about AI’s ability to do great design is officially gone.
There, I said it:
AI beat me at design.
Now that AI finally took my job, I can peacefully quit and dedicate my life to studying the only thing it may never achieve: human consciousness and the pathways to God.
Good luck everyone.

Last year, I went to Mexico City and taught AI tools to a small group of filmmakers and artists.
My favorite moment in was when I walked away from the group and came back to find this artist crying because she had finally been able to visualize a story she wanted to produce since she was a teenager. She called her mother immediately to tell her.
These are the moments I live for. This is incredibly inspiring. And this is happening all over the world. It’s beautiful.

Welcome to the new members of America's most pro-crypto Congress ever... 219+ pro-crypto candidates and counting have now been elected to the House & Senate.
Tonight the crypto voter has spoken decisively - across party lines and in key races across the country. Americans disproportionately care about crypto and want clear rules of the road for digital assets. We look forward to working with the new Congress to deliver it.
Thank you to everyone who stood with crypto today. We did it! #StandWithCrypto
