As you ring in the New Year tonight, please don't drink and drive. Be responsible by thinking ahead and having a plan for a designated driver. Start 2024 off right!

Had a great Sunday Service at First AME Church with our young people divison (YPD). I was born here, baptized here, raised here, and now, I'm honored to be a stewart here. This is home. Community and connection is what we need for Seattle. Get out the vote! Nov. 7th. 🗳🗳

This is a damn shame... Black People need Public Safety Now... Yes, the studies say this... the studies say that... Yes, we want community-based & led harm reduction and all of the other "Venacular" used... but how does any of that stop us from getting shot TONIGHT?!? Sad Day.
#ThePostman - I spoke with Keanna Pickett this morning, she said she is closing The Postman indefinitely citing safety concerns. Loss after loss right now in the #CentralDistrict all linked to violence. Video below is Keanna in March 2020 when The Postman had a "Sending Love" campaign where they would send a greeting card for free on behalf of community members to loved ones anywhere in the world due to the COVID lockdowns at the time. I have been covering The Postman since they first opened, all the ups and the tragic downs. Praying for you KeAnna. Full statement can be found on The Postman Seattle IG.

Bullets rang out early this morning in the #CentralDistrict shattering the windows at #ThePostman as candles from a vigil hours earlier remembering the life of D’Vonne Pickett Jr. who was murdered here exactly one year ago still burned bright. No injuries reported.

When will this violence stop. A learning center was just shot up today in the middle of crossfire on 23rd & Jackson. Who is going to stand for the victims and our community members who are impacted by this violence daily. If our kids won’t make you take a stand nothing will.

Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay. The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, @TribeNisqually, @Puyallup_Tribe and @SquaxinIsland Tribe have been here since time immemorial. These tribes were the first caretakers of the land in Pierce County and continue to protect where we all live. ❤️

GUEST RANT: A recent Stranger article intending to paint me as a NIMBY (based on a 2017 email I sent) was only the most recent one-size-fits-all attack on Black and BIPOC perspectives from a largely white-lensed “urbanist” frame. | via @JoyHollings thestranger.com/guest-editor…

Thousands of Seattle Public Schools students have visited @winglukemuseum and learned about the contributions and lived experiences of Asian Americans. There is nothing else like it. I am devastated by this attack on our community.

“How do we hold you accountable, and how do we know the decisions you made are going to truly be honored in the end?” Those were the questions asked to Telitha Floyd, Community Engagement Director for the Seattle People’s Budget. They held a session to teach participants and citizens of Seattle about the Participatory Budgeting process, which involves the plan for dispersing $27.25 million across the Black and Brown community. “As a lived experience outreach person, it’s my job to go out into the community and make people aware that they have this money, and find out what they see in their community that they want fixed,” community member Zsa Zsa Floyd said. Mano, who serves as the Community Investment Strategic Advisor, says the process is based in the history of police violence that has impacted Black, Brown and Indigenous communities. “We recognize that the ways we address those issues can’t just be the same ways we’ve been doing it,” Mano said. “The strategies that will work in these situations is to make sure community is intricately involved in the solutions.” The process puts the decision making in the hands of the community, allowing discussion and decisions on how tax dollars should be spent to happen among the PB committee. Similar groups are in action across the country and in Canada, with over $386 million total across all Participatory Budgeting groups. The process is currently in the proposal development stage, where steering committee members are working on presentations to the public which you will then have the chance to vote on between October 1st and October 15th. You can keep up with the process at pbseattle.org and learn how you can vote. #ParticipatoryBudgeting #Seattle #Community #BlackSeattle #BlackInSeattle #BlackMedia #BlackMediaMatters #WWConverge
