Going down to Blockbuster, perusing the shelves, picking a movie, renting it and buying snacks was still quicker than finding a film on Netflix.

I for one think it’s bad that the president can just say crazy stuff all day every day and 99% of it doesn’t make the news because we’ve normalized having an insane president

Nos hicieron creer que estar solteras a los 30’s es una tragedia.
Cuando la verdadera tragedia es haberse casado con la persona equivocada a los 23 años.

My sister’s kids complain about being bored on road trips while holding an iPad the entire time. Meanwhile, when I was their age, I’d stare out the window for six hours and get genuinely excited if we passed a cow.

Trailblazing Hattie McDaniel was the 13th child born to former slaves in Wichita, Kansas in 1893. She rose from dire poverty and, after working her way through vaudeville and bit parts in Hollywood, she made history as the first African American to win an Oscar, for her powerful performance in Gone with the Wind (1939). Unfortunately, after accepting the award, Hattie was forced to return to her table far away from the rest of the cast in the back of the room. The ceremony was held at the Ambassador Hotel, which had a whites-only policy, and producer David O. Selznick had to beg the hotel to let McDaniel attend. Even after her historic win, Hollywood only offered her stereotypical roles and though she was criticized for accepting them, she was frank about the limitations that existed in the Jim Crow Era. “I'd rather play a maid and make $700 a week," she said, "than be a maid and make $7.” Off-screen however, Hattie was able to do more to fight racism. In 1945, she galvanized her Black neighbors in West Adams Heights to fight eviction from their homes caused by restrictions banning Black people from living in certain districts. The battle went to court, where the race restrictions were ruled unconstitutional. Two years later she made history again, becoming the first African American actress to star in her own radio show when she took the title role of Beulah (who was previously played by a white male). She was cast in the TV version of Beulah but shot only six episodes before becoming ill with breast cancer. She passed away on October 26, 1952. Her wish to be buried at Hollywood Cemetery (now known as Hollywood Forever) was denied because of racism. She was buried instead at Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery. On the 47th anniversary of her death, Hollywood Forever unveiled a 4 foot tall pink granite cenotaph for her with the words “To Honor Her Last Wish” and included a quote from McDaniel’s grand-nephew: “Aunt Hattie, you are a credit to your craft, your race, and to your family.” As for her Oscar—it’s missing. Hattie left it to Howard University, and it was last seen in 1972. #oscars

🚨A Black Man Spent 41 Years On Death Row For Killing A White Police Chief’s Aunt. New DNA Does Not Match Him.
His name is Douglas Stewart Carter. He is 71.
They say prosecutors almost charged the husband until a Provo lieutenant told them to wait. Then Carter was named. That is what the defense says.
In 1985 a Provo jury convicted him of murdering Eva Olesen, 57. She was the aunt of the police chief. He got death. He has always said he did not do it.
On Monday a judge let him out on bail. He wears a GPS monitor. He is in a hotel. He cannot contact her family. Prosecutors dropped the death-penalty request. A new trial is set for 2027. The state has not declared him innocent.
The old case was a confession he says police forced, plus two witnesses named the Tovars.
Those witnesses later said police paid their bills, threatened to deport them, and told them to lie. Courts found the lead cop and the prosecutor hid that. The conviction was thrown out.
New DNA from Sept. 22 does not match him on blood from a doorknob or material from the knife handle. There was no physical evidence tying him to the house at the first trial. Prosecutors still say the DNA does not automatically clear him.
His lawyers also say witnesses saw a white man running from the house. They say police ignored other suspects, including Eva’s husband, Orla Olesen, who found her body.
41 YEARS. PAID WITNESSES. NO DNA MATCH. HOW MANY MORE!!!!!!!!!!

Today is the anniversary of my uncle tackling a hijacker on a plane and holding him down for 9 hours from Bahrain to New Jersey! This happened on Northwest Airlines flight 1051 on September 28, 2000, a year BEFORE 9/11 happened. I always thought this story should have gotten more attention
I’d like to honor my Uncle, John Whitney, an American hero and remember all of those we lost on 9/11/2001 🇺🇸

SHOW YOUR LOVE! A Happy Birthday to the legendary jazz pianist and vocalist Patrice Rushen born on this day in 1954. Her beautiful voice and style brought us smash hits like Forget Me Nots and she was also the inspiration for Prince's song I Feel For You. She is still a force to be reckoned with to this very day. Happy birthday Queen.
