ALT Promotional artwork for Oliver Stone’s 2004 film Alexander. A helmeted rider on a rearing horse is silhouetted against a layered old map, with blue-grey clouds, warm light and soldiers along the lower edge. The film title and original credits remain at the upper right. This is modern film artwork, not an ancient image or a historical map of Alexander’s empire.

As a neurosurgeon, let me tell you how frightening this injury actually is - an occipital compound depressed skull fracture treated with a WIDE craniotomy (outer staple line).
What's scary isn't the fracture; it's what's adjacent to the damaged skull. The axe blows (that tree-branch scar at the center) hit right over the posterior superior sagittal sinus, a large vein that runs lengthwise between the 2 cerebral hemispheres and carries blood from the brain to the heart.
Penetrating injuries to the sinus can carry upwards of a 40% morbidity/mortality - partially because a transection of the sinus can be difficult to repair and can result in extreme blood loss, venous air embolism, or thrombosis - all of which can be fatal.
There's scary, and then there's the "you go to elevate the fracture and risk unroofing the sinus, losing 2 liters of blood in a minute" scary.
The surgeons likely had their hands full and did an amazing job. Divine providence called many heroes into service that day. Damn fine work.
धन्यवाद

The UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, forever remains in the hearts of the people of the UAE. As he led efforts to establish the Union, laid its foundations, and nurtured its development, his life and legacy were defined by his vision, generosity, and service to humanity. Today, we declare 7 January as Zayed the Founder Day, a new annual national occasion dedicated to celebrating his enduring legacy, transforming wisdom into action, and ensuring these values continue to inspire our nation on its steadfast path of progress towards the future.

Mythical battle between Greek warriors and the Amazons — the legendary women warriors of Greek mythology.
This Amazon Sarcophagus, dating to around 320 BC, was discovered in 1557 in the ancient city of Soloi on Cyprus.
The original owner might have been Stasicrates, a member of the Cypriot ruling family who participated in Alexander the Great's campaign against Tyre in 332 BC.
Maybe he was the one who once lay in this coffin.
And how did this fascinating piece come to be displayed at Vienna's Art History Museum, where I saw it?
In 1567, the Fugger family from Augsburg (today's Bavaria) — at that time probably the richest family in the world — bought it in Venice. It later passed into the Habsburg imperial collections in Vienna.
A beautiful glimpse into the ancient world of Greek warriors and mythology.

We're thrilled to announce the Superpower Peptide Library.
Every peptide, mapped to the body.
152 peptides, from approved drugs to compounds still in trials, sorted by where they act.
Each one has its own page, reviewed by a physician and fully cited, covering:
- the evidence and how strong it is
- its FDA status
- it's mechanism of action
- what studies in humans have found
Because not all peptides are equal.
Semaglutide is FDA-approved. BPC-157, maybe the most talked-about peptide for recovery and repair, is not. In a 2025 review of its research, 35 of 36 studies were in animals or the lab.
Know the science before you buy the hype.
